Pickling process is recognized as one of the strongest acid consuming processes in the steel industry. A pickling solution that contains hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used for the metal surface treatment of steel plants. The same acid can be used for a long period of time by means of a regeneration process, in which iron concentration of the acid is decreased to insignificant concentrations. However, regenerated pickling solutions contain copper, especially when scrap is used to produce steel. Furthermore, copper deposits on the metal in the following pickling processes when its concentration exceeds a certain critical value. This study describes an electrochemical treatment process for collecting copper from regenerated pickling solutions of steel plants. Copper concentration, electrolysis time, and current density were selected as the operation variables and pH and conductivity of the acid together with the amount and morphology of the deposition were considered as the response variables for optimization. Graphite was used as the anode due to its high conductivity and stability and copper or stainless steel was used as the cathode in this study. The results showed that electrochemical treatment process decreased copper concentration to about 80 from 127 ppm using stainless steel cathode under the optimum constant current density of 2.0 A/dm(2) and electrolysis time of 4 hours, without any acid loss, which was verified by pH, conductivity and acidity measurements.

Synthesis of conducting polymers of terepthalic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl-ethyl)ester and investigation of their electrochromic properties
Coşkun, Yelda; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2004)
Terepthalic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl-ethyl)ester (TATE) was synthesized through the reaction of 2-thiophen-3-yl-ethanol and terepthaloyl chloride. Electrochemical behavior of the TATE and TATE in the presence of thiophene were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The chemical structure of monomer is characterized via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Homopolymer of TATE was synthesized by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods, and copolymeri...
Synthesis and characterization of ethanol electro-oxidation catalysts
Demir-Kıvrak, Hilal; Üner, Deniz; Kuliyev, Sadig; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
In this study, the role of defects, the role of Sn in relation to defects, and the role of oxide phase of tin in ethanol electro-oxidation reaction were investigated. Firstly, adsorption calorimetry measurements were conducted on monometallic (1%Pt, 2%Pt, and 5%Pt) and bi-metallic (5% Pt-Sn) γ-Al2O3 supported Pt catalysts. It was observed that while saturation coverage values decreased, intermediate heats remained same for Pt-Sn catalysts by the increasing amount of tin. The effect of particle size was inve...

Electrochemical copolymerization was utilized to combine several properties into a single material in order to obtain a highly stable polymer with a low band gap to meet the requirements for color variation. In that sense, two new donor acceptor type electrochromic copolymers of 2,3-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)5,8-di(1H-pyrrol-2-yl) quinoxaline (TBPPQ) with bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (BiEDOT) and with 4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-dodecyl-2H-benzo [ 1,231 triazole (BEBT) were synthesiz...

Immobilization of whole viable Pseudomonas fluorescens cells was achieved on a graphite electrode modified with a thiophene-based conducting polymer. Microbial electrodes were constructed by the entrapment of bacterial cells on conducting copolymer matrix using a dialysis membrane. The biosensor was characterized using glucose as the substrate. As well as analytical characterization, effects of electropolymerization time, pH and temperature on the sensor response were examined. Finally, operational stabilit...
