Hydropower is the main domestic energy resource of Turkey. The total gross and the economically feasible hydropower potentials of Turkey are estimated as 433 TWh/yr and 127 TWh/yr, respectively, by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs.(1) Approximately 35% of the economically feasible hydropower potential is currently being utilized. The government accelerated the development of the unused potential by enabling the private sector to build and operate hydroelectric power plants. The primary goal of a feasibility study is the determination of the best installed capacity through economic analysis, which is based on evaluation of energy incomes and investment costs associated with alternative installed capacities. Generally, it is relatively easy to realistically estimate the investment costs. On the other hand, energy income estimation is not a straight forward process; a number of different methods which result in different income estimates are being used in Turkey. The General Directorate of Renewable Energy (YEGM) of the Ministry and Natural Resources and 1351 recommend similar methods for energy income estimation based on firm and secondary energy generations. However, suggested unit prices for firm and secondary energy generations by DSI and YEGM are quite different, which results in different energy income estimations. Apart from these two methods, consultancy firms, unlike DSI and YEGM, use a single unit price for energy without making any distinction between firm and secondary energies. In all three methods fixed energy prices are used. Nevertheless these approaches do not represent the current situation in Turkey, since the electricity market allows development of hourly electricity prices. In this study, a new energy income estimation method which utilizes hourly electricity prices, called the Variable Price Method is developed. Results of these four methods are compared for a case study, namely Altiparmak Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Alternative feasibility studies for Altıparmak Dam and HEPP
Ak, Mümtaz; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
Hydropower is the most important domestic energy source of Turkey. Thus, wise planning and development of the unused hydropower potential of the country is vital. There are many hydroelectric power plants under planning stage in our country. Altıparmak HEPP is one of them. General Directorate of Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EİE) and ANC Enerji conducted two separate feasibility studies for Altıparmak HEPP in 2001 and 2009, respectively. Traditionally, the energy income c...
Development of the rule curve for Altıparmak hydroelectric power plant
Boyacıoğlu, Şerife Ece; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Energy requirement of Turkey increases day by day and hydropower is currently the main renewable energy source of the country. Thus, planning the development of the unused hydropower potential of Turkey is critical. Available water resources have to be developed and managed in a wise manner. Reservoir operation rule curves are fundamental guidelines for long term reservoir operation. Rule curve which results in the maximum energy generation has to be developed for each hydropower plant (HEPP). The goal of t...
Solar energy R&D, technology and economics in Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, E (Elsevier BV, 1990-1)
The solar energy potential of Turkey is assessed. Solar energy R&D programs and technology and the present market for flat-plate solar collectors are briefly reviewed. The potential share of solar energy in the total energy budget is estimated.
Türkiye'deki Jeotermal Bölge Isıtma Sistemlerinin Gelişimi
Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Parlaktuna, Burak (2021-07-06)
Turkey is one of the few countries that has almost all possible applications of geothermal energy. Geothermal district heating has a relatively short history (since 1987) compared to other direct utilization but plays important economic, social and environmental roles in some towns. There are 18 geothermal district heating systems (GDHS), mainly in the Aegean region with resource temperatures between 57–145C. Current heating capacities of those systems are in the range of 570 to 37500 Residence Equivalent ...
THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY ENERGY PLANNING IN DECENTRALIZATION POLICIES OF TURKEY
Erkan, Esengül; Senol Balaban, Meltem; Department of Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments (2022-1-27)
The thesis examines the applications of renewable energy towards community energy as an urban policy in the local governments of Turkey. A comprehensive study was conducted on the energy production and consumption from renewable energy in the world and in Turkey, and the increase in global renewable energy activities in recent years was discussed together with issues such as climate crisis and localization. In the discussions on political, administrative, and financial decentralization and privatization pol...
