Europe and its others : immigrants and new racism in Europe
Özkan, Yağmur; Yeğenoğlu-Mutman, Meyda; Department of Sociology (2007)
There is no doubt about the fact that Europe has become home for millions of ex-colonails, guest-workers, refugees, asylum-seekers. However, these new Europeans are not acknowledged to be Europeans but instead they are mostly perceived as not belonging. Being deprived of political and social rights and exposed to economic exploitation make them the European "apartheid". Within this present conjunture, this thesis aims at a modest discussion on ever-rising racism in Europe. It focuses on European racism and ...

Bozo Özen, Özlem; Kurum, Oya (2009-03-01)
The authors examined the effects of activities of daily living (ADL) and perceived social support on the level of depression among elderly Turkish people. Participants were 102 adults older than the age of 60 years. The authors hypothesized that (a) lower levels of ADL would predict a higher level of depression, (b) a higher level of perceived social support would predict a lower level of depression, and (c) perceived social support would moderate the relation between ADL and depression. Although hierarchic...

In the shadow of the Syrian conflict generating millions of displaced people, education provision for Syrian children has become a challenge for Turkey as the leading refugee hosting country. While great number of children who do not speak the national language is putting a strain on the limited capacity of state institutions, civil society organizations are trying to bridge the education gap for non-camp Syrian children. Given Turkey’s political interests and the evolving migration management context, this...

Dal, Derya; Benli Altunışık, Meliha; Department of Middle East Studies (2022-2-10)
A tragic result of the prolonged conflict in Syria has been the refugee crisis that affected the international community in general, and the countries sharing borders with Syria in particular. Lebanon, a neighboring state to Syria, with a small territory and complex political system, has hosted the highest number of Syrian refugees per capita. Maintaining a fragile economic, social and political structure, Lebanon is greatly impacted by the arrival of a substantial number of refugees. Consequently, the refu...
Living an uncertain life on the margins of Ankara
Subaşı, Işın; Bayırbağ, Mustafa K.; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2019)
This thesis aims to analyze how poor Syrian refugees navigate their lives concerning the structural violence of neoliberal economic policies and temporary protection status which set the stage for further exploitation, securitization and precarization for Syrian refugees in Turkey. Although the studies associated with refugees have been mostly dominated by the humanitarian, criminalizing and tolerating narratives and have had a strong tendency to portray Syrian refugees' experience as a reproducing cycle of...
