Cognitive and computational aspects of gender estimation from faces
Balcı, M. Koray; Atalay, Volkan; Tekman, Hasan Gürkan; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2002)
The aim of this work is to propose a computationally feasible and cognitively plausible model for face processing, and to develop a system for gender estima tion from face images. For this purpose, we propose a general face processing model that encapsulates all face-specific tasks. The model is inspired by the find ings from cognitive studies. We implement the core of the whole model which uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) procedure and develop a classifier for gender estimation. As classifier, we im...
The Effects of direct and integrated instruction of cognitive and metacognitive and reading strategies at awareness-raising level on reading proficiency and strategy use
Çiçekoğlu, Deniz; Daloğlu, Ayşegül; Department of English Language Education (2003)
This study intends to find out the possible effects of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategy instruction at awareness-raising level on reading proficiency and strategy use. In the study both qualitative and quantitative data were utilized. The relevant data were obtained by means of think-aloud protocols, semi-structured interviews, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning اSILL- (Oxford, 1990), learning diaries and the reading scores of students on a proficiency exam (COPE). A total of 24 studen...
Can Thought-Action Fusion Be Induced and Alleviated?
DEMİRSÖZ, TALAT; MISIRLISOY, MİNE; Karancı, Ayşe Nuray (2018-12-01)
Objective: This study aims to examine the effects of the induction of thought-action fusion (TAF) on appraisal process, by using an enhanced paradigm which integrates the favourable aspects of Sentence Completion Task (SCT) with Obsessive-Compulsive (OC)-like perseverative reasoning (PR) task. The study also aims to evaluate the effect of psychoeducation (PE) on alleviating the level of TAF-Induction experience. Method: A total of three groups were formed. The first group with high OC traits (47 participant...
Akilli Bir Kirişin Titreşimlerinin Doğrusal Karesel Düzenleyici (LQR) ile Aktif Denetimi
Akın, Onur; Şahin, Melin (Theoretical and Applied Mechanical Turkish National Committee; 2015-08-24)
In this study, active vibration control of a smart beam equipped with piezoelectric patches which are used as both sensor and actuator is investigated by using linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method. Frequency response function that includes the first natural frequency of the smart beam is obtained by applying exponential sine wave within the specified frequency range to the piezoelectric actuator patch and measuring the response of the system from another piezoelectric patch as a sensor. Then, by using th...
The role of cognitive defusion, depression, mindfulness and experiential avoidance on internet addiction among university students
Aslan, Şebnem; Güneri, Oya; Department of Educational Sciences (2020-9)
The present study aimed to investigate the role of cognitive defusion, depression, mindfulness, and experiential avoidance on internet addiction among university students. The sample of the study comprised of 640 (441 women, 199 men) university students. The Demographic Information Form, Young Internet Addiction Test Short Form (YIAT-SF), Drexel Defusion Scale (DDS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Multidimensional Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire-30 (MEAQ-30) ...
