The methods of analysis used to determine ultimate bearing capacity of piles are applied to a field case in Turkey. During the pile driving works of the Atatürk Culture Center in Samsun, Delmag D22-13 and Delmag D-15 diesel pile driving hammers have been used. The ultimate bearing capacity and skin friction values calculated using static formulas have been given as input to the wave equation pile analysis program FADWAVE written by J.E.Bowles. The analytical method used in this program was based on the wave propagation in solids originated in 1962 by E.A.L.Smith. The results obtained from the program are compared with each other.

Investigation of model updating techniques and their applications to aircraft structures
Kozak, Mustafa Tuğrul; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
Mathematical models that are built in order to simulate the behavior of structures, most often, tend to respond differently than the actual structures in their initial state. In order to use the mathematical models and their computational outputs instead of testing the real structure under every possible case, it is mandatory to have a mathematical model that reflects the characteristics of the actual structure in the best possible way. In this thesis, the so called model updating techniques used for updati...
Some observations on the seismic behaviour of traditional timber structures in Turkey
Akan, Aslı Er; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Architecture (2004)
This thesis is about behaviour of traditional timber structures under lateral loads in Turkey. The timber-framed houses are the products of cultural heritage of people who live in Anatolia. These structures have performed well in earthquakes throughout the history. As a result, this study intends to present the observations on the seismic behaviours of traditional timber buildings with the help of computer-generated models. In this thesis, the general characteristics of timber are examined, the earthquake p...
Application of acoustic emission for damage classification and assessment of corrosion in pre-stressed concrete pipes
Goldaran, Reza; Türer, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2020-08-01)
The present study describes the usage of the AE technique for detecting different types of damage in corrosion process with characterization of corresponding AE sources in pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipes. Firstly, several small-scale tests were implemented to specify the characteristics of AE sources including water absorption of concrete, hydrogen bubbles bursting and concrete cracks, as well as determining the appropriate sensors positions. Later on, a full-scale pre-stressed pipe was subjected to co...
Prediction of forming limit curve at fracture for sheet metal using new ductile fracture criterion
Dizaji, Shahram Abbasnejad; Darendeliler, Haluk; KAFTANOĞLU, BİLGİN (Elsevier BV, 2018-05-01)
The application of ductile fracture criteria (DFCs) in numerical analysis of sheet metal forming processes can lead to the accurate determination of the fracture initiation. In this study, a new uncoupled ductile fracture criterion (DFC) has been developed which considers the effects of material parameters on the forming limit curves (FLCs) and can be easily implemented in the finite element codes. Two different constitutive models have been employed with the new DFC in order to evaluate the results obtaine...
Non-linear mathematical modeling of gear rotor bearing systems including bearing clearance
Gürkan, Niyazi Ersan; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
In this study, a non-linear mathematical model of gear-rotor systems which consists of elastic shafts on elastic bearings with clearance and coupled by a non-linear gear mesh interface is developed. The mathematical model and the software (NLGRD 2.0) developed in a previous study is extended to include the non-linear effects due to bearing clearances by using non-linear bearing models. The model developed combines the versatility of using finite element method and the rigorous treatment of non-linear effect...
