Solar radiation is an important parameter which is used in building energy simulations especially in solar heat gain calculations of windows. Although the climatic parameters are considered comprehensively in Building Energy Performance Regulations and its appendix BEP-TR calculation method, TS 825 Thermal Insulation Requirements for Buildings is still in effect and proposes the usage of the same solar radiation data in different climatic regions. In this study the solar radiations of vertical surfaces were calculated numerically for sample cities from each of the degree day regions according to TS 825 (Antalya (1st region), Istanbul (2nd region), Elazığ (3rd region) and Kayseri (4th region)). The annual heating energy requirements of buildings having three different form factors and nine different transparency ratios were calculated with the calculated solar radiation and long-term monthly average outdoor temperature values obtained from Turkish State Meteorological Service for four different cities. The obtained energy requirements were compared with annual heating energy requirements of the same building samples calculated with the climatic data given by TS 825 and the appropriateness of the standard for different degree day regions was evaluated.

Investigation of the effect of outdoor temperature data on the building heating energy requirement and validity of the TS 825 degree-day region clustering
Altun, Murat; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Akgül, Çağla (2020-01-01)
The outdoor temperature is one of the most important parameters affecting the calculation of energy requirements of buildings. Determination of the thermal insulation details and heating energy requirement of the buildings in Turkey, where energy consumption is dominated by space heating, is made according to TS 825 "Thermal Insulation Rules in Buildings" standard. In TS 825, the provinces are clustered in degree-day regions (DDR) according to their climatic conditions. The main climatic parameter that sepa...
Statistical analysis of solar radiation data
Yilmaz, E.; Cancino, B.; Parra, W. R. (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
Solar radiation is the most important parameter in the design and study of solar energy conversion devices. The present work is based on statistical analysis of solar radiation data for the city of Valparaiso in the coast region of Chile. Experimental data were obtained from the Santa Maria University in Valparaiso over a five-year period measured by the actinograph and the pyranometer. The error between the actinography values in relation to the pyranometer ones was determined. The most frequent error perc...
Estimation of diffuse component for two locations in Turkey
Karaveli, Abdullah Bugrahan; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin (2016-10-14)
In analyzing the solar energy systems, the first step is the accurate measurements/estimations of the input in the long term: solar irradiation incident on the panels. The measurements are lacking in many places so the estimation procedures should be developed using the measured data of the locations having similar climates and close in latitudes. In most life cycle assessments, monthly averages of daily values are utilized in the form of typical meteorological year or simply with the averages of a year or ...
Proposal of a Novel Gravity-Fed, Particle-Filled Solar Receiver
JOHNSON, Evan; Baker, Derek Keıth; Tarı, İlker (2016-10-14)
Solar Thermal Electricity power plants utilizing solid particles as heat transfer and storage media have been proposed by several research groups, with studies citing benefits of increased thermal efficiency and lower cost. Several types of solid particle receivers have been proposed, with leading designs consisting of particles falling or suspended in air. A new solid particle receiver is proposed here, consisting of a receiver fully packed with particles flowing downward with gravity. Particle flow rate i...
Investigation of various options for numerical modeling of fluidized bedsI for a solar thermal application
Bilyaz, Serhat; Tarı, İlker (null; 2015-05-29)
Circulating fluidized bed solid particle absorption solar thermal energy system is a promising approach to solar thermal with thermal energy storage. For accurately modeling such systems, the fluidized bed numerical model should be correctly representing the behavior of the actual bed. There are several suggested partial semi-empirical models in the literature considering distinct phenomena related to fluidization and void fraction distribution in a fluidized be...
