The outdoor temperature is one of the most important parameters affecting the calculation of energy requirements of buildings. Determination of the thermal insulation details and heating energy requirement of the buildings in Turkey, where energy consumption is dominated by space heating, is made according to TS 825 "Thermal Insulation Rules in Buildings" standard. In TS 825, the provinces are clustered in degree-day regions (DDR) according to their climatic conditions. The main climatic parameter that separates these DDRs from each other is the outdoor temperature. In this study, it is aimed to discuss the effect of outdoor temperature on the building heating energy requirement and validity of the DDRs in the standard according to outdoor temperature data. In this context; the heating energy requirement of the case building is calculated according to different outdoor temperature data of the provinces and the outdoor temperature data of the DDRs in the current and recommended version of the standard. The effectiveness of the DDRs and the updates in the standard are examined by comparing them separately for 81 provinces. The results show that in some DDR clusters, Qyear values of the provinces from different DGBs are very close to each other: even, comparative Qyear values of some of them contradict with their DDR. This situation suggests that the DDR approach should be re-examined. Besides, the new DDRs in the recommended version of the standard is rather compatible with the comparative results. In addition, the selection of the heating threshold temperature has been shown to have a limited effect on the calculations, while the up-to-dateness of the outdoor temperature data to be used in the analyses has been shown to significantly affect the heating energy calculation of the building.

TS 825 İklimsel Verilerinin Farklı Derece Gün Bölgeleri İçin Uygunluğunun Değerlendirilmesi
Aksoy, Ufuk Teoman; Bektaş Ekici, Betül (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2013-12-1)
Solar radiation is an important parameter which is used in building energy simulations especially in solar heat gain calculations of windows. Although the climatic parameters are considered comprehensively in Building Energy Performance Regulations and its appendix BEP-TR calculation method, TS 825 Thermal Insulation Requirements for Buildings is still in effect and proposes the usage of the same solar radiation data in different climatic regions. In this study the solar radiations of vertical surfaces were...
Comparison of MODIS-derived land surface temperature with air temperature measurements
Georgiou, Andreas; Akcit, Nuhcan (2017-03-23)
Air surface temperature is an important parameter for a wide range of applications such as agriculture, hydrology and climate change studies. Air temperature data is usually obtained from measurements made in meteorological stations, providing only limited information about spatial patterns over wide areas. The use of remote sensing data can help overcome this problem, particularly in areas with low station density, having the potential to improve the estimation of air surface temperature at both regional a...
Investigation of mechanical and thermal properties of sintered bauxite and sand particles as heat transfer and storage media
Uykun, Zeynep; Tarı, İlker; Baker, Derek Keıth; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-1-11)
Solid particles have gained an attraction in recent years to be used as a heat transfer and storage medium that can be integrated into various thermal power plants. Particles operate in a closed-loop cycle in the power plants such as Concentrating Solar Power (CSP); firstly, they are heated up in the receiver then carried to the storage system and they discharge their energy to the thermodynamic-cycle. Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been gaining importance for modeling particle-based heat transfer and st...
Theoretical investigation of a humidification-dehumidification desalination system configured by a double-pass flat plate solar air heater
Yamali, Cemil; Solmus, Ismail (Elsevier BV, 2007-02-05)
The aim of this study is to investigate theoretically the effect of different system operating conditions, types of air heater, and some different design parameters and a weather condition on a solar water desalination system performance under the climatological conditions of Ankara (40 degrees N,33 degrees E), Turkey. For this purpose, a computer simulation program based on the mathematical model is developed by means of MATLAB software. In this simulation program, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is us...

In buildings, which have a significant share of energy consumption, the proper construction and design of the building envelope is an important issue on all countries due to environmental problems and energy supply. Therefore, controlling the heat loss/gain from the building envelope is an inevitable necessity when considering the increasing building stock in Turkey. Reducing the amount of energy consumed in both new and existing buildings leads to new environmental and climate-sensitive approaches. Double ...
