Localization for mobile robots using skyline in panoramic images

2019-01-01
Advances in robotics liberated robots from factory floors by the end of 20th century. Use of robots in our daily lives is only expected to increase in time. Robots, while relieving us of the burden of tedious, hard and dangerous tasks, most of them are still expected to be territorial, i.e. they will operate in a predefined or rather bounded environment. For enhanced performance, a robot should be familiar with its territory. In this work, use of skylines extracted from panoramic images is studied in order to provide localization. To achieve localization, first a special map is prepared using a series of panoramic images taken from the territory. Images, those taken from the vicinity of this map at different times and under different weather conditions, are localized on this map. Given that the proposed method only focuses on a small portion of the panoramic image, it is relatively easier to implement in various hardware platforms (especially those with limited computational capabilities) in comparison to the methods that process the whole image.

Moving part recognition and automatic pick and place using an industrial robot
Konukseven, Erhan İlhan (1996-01-01)
Robotics research continuously seeks to improve productivity in manufacturing automation. With the recent advances in the areas of vision and sensing, robots have become a major element of today's industrial world. They have been beneficial in replacing humans not only in tasks at which robots are more efficient but also in those that humans find undesirable because they are strenuous, boring, difficult, or hazardous. IF. the last several yeats, more and more efforts have been put in the integration of mult...
Design of a low-costs warm robotic system for flocking
Demir, Çağrı Ata; Turgut, Ali Emre; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
Swarm robotics is an approach to the coordination of large numbers of robots. The main motivation of this thesis is to study a robotic system designed to do flocking both indoors and outdoors. A walking robot is designed parallel to this purpose. In the first part of thesis, a leg is designed to minimize the displacement of center of mass of robot in vertical axis to eliminate mechanical noise. Mechanism analysis and Matlab optimization tools are utilized in this process. Then, electronic components of robo...
Control and motion planning for mobile robots via a secure wireless communication protocol
Kaya, Muhammed Çağrı; Eroğlu, Alperen; Temizer, Selim (null; 2013-05-21)
Mobile robot control is receiving considerably more attention in current robotics research. Especially unmanned vehicles are used in important missions such as bomb disposal, patrolling borders of a country by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), etc. This usage increases the importance of unmanned vehicles and they become a target of malevolent people. In this study, a controllable robot system is designed with a secure communication protocol. A Pioneer P3-DX robot is used as a ground vehicle. The robot operat...
Exploring design requirements for educational robots used in K-12 education from educator’s perspective
Gürkanlı, Cengiz Hakan; Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Department of Industrial Design (2018)
Robotics field has broad application in human society and design space of robots even broader. In the last decades, robots were started to be used for various purposes after their first examples in industrial settings. Use of robots in various human work domains provide multiple benefits over other technological devices. Education is one of the challenging primary fields in which robots offer advantages over other technologies. Unlike other fields of robotics which requires advanced programming architecture...
