Policy makers and researchers are increasingly recognizing the critical role of technology in the successful industrialization of LDCs. Research on the technological activities of LDC firms, and on the factors including technical change in these countries, is at an early stage. A better understanding of the issue requires detailed empirical work. This paper presents the findings of research carried out among the 659 largest manufacturing firms across industries in Turkey in the period 1987–1988. The study relates the export-oriented development strategy that has been pursued in Turkey since 1980 to the rate and direction of technological change in Turkish manufacturing. It finds trade policy to be an important determinant of the direction of in-house technological change, but not of the rate of research and development (R&D).

Knowledge and Economic Growth: A Dynamic Panel Data Analysis for OECD Countries
Utku İsmihan, Fatma M. (Science And Technology Policies Research Center, Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey), 2018)
This paper aims to investigate the role of knowledge in the economic growth convergence of the OECD member countries during the 1995-2011 period, by utilizing production function approach. In our augmented production function framework, in addition to human capital, we consider other important channels of knowledge (R&D, trade and ICTs) to understand how knowledge contributes to the growth performance and growth convergence of the OECD countries. Furthermore, in contrast to most of the existing studies whic...
Science and technology policy in Turkey national strategies for innovation and change, 1983-2003 and beyond
Uzun, A (2005-07-28)
An evaluation of Turkey's science and technology (S & T) policy in the last two decades has been made by using various indicators of S & T and technological innovation. National trends in inputs for research and development (R & D) activities, publication output and patent data have been studied for the implications of the S & T policy from 1983 to 2003. Some of the findings on the outcomes of policy measures in terms of inputs to R & D and publication output are as follows: (1) Total R & D expenditure, as ...
