Tests are conducted on quarterly macroeconomic data for Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and West Germany to check for the presence of deterministic chaos. Deterministic chaos is rejected using a number of fairly recently developed empirical tools. In the process we found surprisingly strong evidence of nonlinearities in the case of Japan. The evidence indicates that Japan is also the most stable of the countries studied. A satisfactory modelling of Japanese data will need to allow for suitable nonlinearity

International relations studies in Asia: Japan, China, and India compared
Yücel, Okan; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of International Relations (2020)
This thesis attempts to analyze the development of IR studies in three major Asian countries, namely Japan, China, and India. The main research question is whether the Asian study of IR is capable of challenging the ontological and epistemological assumptions of the Western study of IR. Currency and asset substitution in Turkey
Taşdemir, Özlem; Özmen, Erdal; Department of Economics (2003)
This study investigates the determinants and effects of currency and asset substitution in Turkey using quarterly data from 1987:1 to 2002:4. The empirical results from the application of Johansen procedure to a four-variable system containing currency-asset substitution proxy (M2Y/M2)), real income, real exchange rate, and ratchet effect proxy (past peak values of the depreciation of the real exchange rate) suggest the presence of a single cointegration vector among the variables. The results further sugge...
The Changing Role of Financial Stress, Oil Price, and Gold Price in Financial Contagion among US and BRIC Markets
Kocaarslan, Baris; Soytaş, Uğur; Sarı, Ramazan; Ugurlu, Ecenur (2019-09-01)
The objective of this paper is to explore the determining factors behind financial contagion between US and BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) equity markets. To this end, we investigate the effects of global macroeconomic factors on the time-varying correlations among these markets obtained by asymmetric dynamic conditional correlation method. Utilizing quantile regression analysis, we examine the determinants of financial contagion at different levels of time-varying correlations. The results of quan...
The evolution of central Eurasia policy of the US in the post-Soviet era and the geopolitics of the Caspian oil
Değer, Deniz; Altunışık, Meliha; Department of International Relations (2006)
The objective of this thesis is to analyze the US Central Eurasia Policy in the period between 1991 and 2006. Within this context, the purpose is to figure out the foremost motive behind the US’s strategic engagement in the region with a due regard to changing geopolitical context with the demise of the Soviet Union. The main argument rests upon the assumption that the US regional policy is primarily motivated by geopolitical imperatives as the Central Eurasian region becomes the primary springboard for the...
Exchange Rate Regimes and Business Cycles: An Empirical Investigation
Erdem, Fatma Pinar; Özmen, Erdal (2015-11-01)
This paper empirically investigates the impacts of domestic and external factors along with exchange rate regimes (ERRs) on business cycles in a large panel of advanced and emerging market economies (EME). The results for classical business cycles suggest that EME tend to experience much deeper recessions and relatively steeper expansions during almost the same duration. The probability of expansions significantly increases with ERR flexibility. Our results strongly support floating ERR for both advanced an...
