We investigate whether the pattern of Turkish trade has a persistent nature or is dynamic, by considering 5-digit Rev. 3 trade data for the period 1969 to 2001 and investigating whether their distribution between sectors which are in surplus, in balance or in deficit, has shown persistence over time. The tools we use involve classifying the sectors as surplus, balance and deficit sectors and constructing a 3 x 3 contingency table, indicating whether sectors that, say, showed a surplus at the beginning of a period remained surplus sectors at the end of the period or moved into the balance and deficit categories, testing whether the beginning pattern is independent of the pattern at the end of a period and constructing histograms regarding the distribution of how long the sectors have been showing surpluses over the period. We used these tools on Turkish trade for the full 1969 to 2001 period and for two (1969 to 1979, 1980 to 2001) and three (1969 to 1979, 1980 to 1996, 1997 to 2001) subperiods. We conclude that when one considers long enough periods, the pattern of Turkish foreign trade has a very dynamic nature, and it appears safe to say that this dynamic nature shows itself in the post-1980 period.

Measuring intra-industry and marginal intra-industry trade - The case for Turkey
Erlat, Güzin; Erlat, Haluk (2003-11-01)
Works on whether Turkey's trade structure is predominantly interindustry or intra-industry and whether there has been a shift toward intra-industry trade (HT) after 1980 are of a limited number The present study attempts to shed some light on these questions, stressing, in particular changes in HT We consider Turkey's trade with the world for the 1969-99 period. We first use the Grubel-Lloyd (GL) index and find that there is a definite difference in the pattern of the weighted average of the three-digit (SI...
The formation and transformation of trade relationsin the European Union (1958-2018)
Akoğlu Şişman, Melda; Türkeş, Mustafa; Department of International Relations (2021-2-5)
This thesis explores the formation and transformation of the European Union’s (EU) trade relations in its integration process, mainly considering the enlargements it has completed so far. Therefore, it seeks to answer how the six founding-core members and the newcomers, who joined the EU after its establishment, have shaped the trade relations of the EU between 1958 and 2018. The methodology is to demonstrate the trade policy formation and its reflection on the EU’s actual trade relations by presenting deta...
Assessment of the effect of hydroelectric power plants' governor settings on low frequency inter area oscillations
GENCOGLU, C; Tor, O.B.; Cebeci, E.; Yilmaz, O.; Güven, Ali Nezih (2010-10-28)
The Turkish TSO (TEIAS) has been leading a project that aims the synchronous interconnected operation of the Turkish Power System and the ENTSO-E CESA (former UCTE) System. For this purpose, this study concentrates on the specific problems related to the electromechanical systems of large size hydroelectric power plants regarding low frequency inter area oscillations, which are prone to occur once the interconnected operation is established. The expected frequency of inter area oscillations after interconne...

The Relationship Between Disaggregated Country Risk Ratings and Stock Market Movements: An ARDL Approach
Sarı, Ramazan; Hammoudeh, Shawkat (Informa UK Limited, 2013-01-01)
We examine the relationships between disaggregated country risk ratings and stock market movements in Turkey, using the autoregressive distributed lag approach. The long- and short-run relationships between stock market movements and political risk, financial risk, and economic risk components of country risk ratings are investigated. The presence of a long-run relationship between Turkey's risk ratings and stock market movements is confirmed. In the long run, Turkey's three economic, financial, and politic...
