This paper describes formulation of a hand method which can be used to estimate the computed fundamental periods of vibration of steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). The developed method uses the Rayleigh's method as a basis and utilizes the roof drift ratio under seismic forces as a parameter. The roof drift ratio was obtained from EBF designs by considering different seismic hazard, number of stories, braced bay width, and link length to bay width ratio. A simple expression was developed to represent roof drift ratio as a function of the seismic hazard and bay width. The method was verified using design data produced as a part of this work and data published in literature. The verifications indicate that the proposed formulation is capable of providing acceptable estimates of the computed period. When compared with existing empirical period-height relationships the proposed formulation offers closer estimates with reduced scatter. The method was further refined to derive a new period height relationship. The accuracy of this relationship was verified using measured periods of EBF buildings.

Fundamental periods of steel eccentrically braced frames
Kusyilmaz, Ahmet; Topkaya, Cem (2015-02-10)
This paper describes formulation of a hand method that can be used to estimate the computed fundamental periods of vibration of building structures in general and steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) in particular. The developed method uses the Rayleigh's method as a basis and utilizes the roof drift ratio (RDR) under seismic forces as a parameter. To obtain RDR, more than 4000 EBFs were designed by considering the seismic hazard, number of stories, braced bay width and link length to bay width ratio as...

This paper presents an analytical study that focuses on the development ofa parametric equation to predict the joint shear strength. In this analytical study, adatabase containing geometric properties, material strengths, configuration detailsand test results of reinforced concrete beam-to-column connection subassembliestested under cyclic loading is established. Then, based on the experimental results, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. The most influentialparameters are selected and ...

A great deal of attention has been drawn to the coating of transparent photocatalytic TiO2 onto outdoor building materials, such as glass, the and stone, for utilizing the self-cleaning effect originating from the hydrophilic behavior of the coated layer under ultraviolet irradiation. Two key technologies should be developed for the successful commercialization of a hydrophilic photocatalyst, i.e., superior activity of the TiO2 sol, and a transparent and strong adhesive coating. A photocatalytic TiO2 Sol sh...
Design overstrength of steel eccentrically braced frames
Kusyilmaz, Ahmet; Topkaya, Cem (2013-09-01)
The paper reports an analytical study on the design overstrength of steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). The study aimed at examining the influence of geometrical factors and seismic hazard on the design overstrength of EBFs. Pursuant to this goal a computer program which facilitates EBF designs was developed. The algorithm of the program adopts the lightest uniform frame design and library of link-beam-brace sub-assemblages concepts. The design output from the program was compared with published solut...
A New Method for Leakage Inductance Calculation of Transverse Flux Machines
Zafarani, Mohsen; Moallem, Mehdi; Ghadamyari, Mohammad Adib (2011-09-10)
This paper presents a new analytical method for leakage inductance calculation of transverse flux permanent magnet machines. In this method, leakage flux paths are predicted base on the finite element results, and then all paths would be modeled by flux tubes. Finally, the inductance of the machine would be obtained by calculation of the permeance of flux tubes. The validity of the proposed model is verified by comparing the Finite Element results with the results obtained from the proposed approach. Compar...
