Due to the environmental constraints and the limitations on blasting, ripping as a ground loosening and breaking method has become more popular in both mining and civil engineering applications. Because of the technological advances in dozer manufacturing techniques, more powerful dozer types are available today. Thus, the ground, previously classified as non-rippable, has become rippable. As a consequence, a more applicable rippability classification system is needed which considers both equipment properties as well as rock properties in all applications. This paper is part of a complementary research work and presents the development of a previously published grading rippability classification system by the application of fuzzy set theory. The integrated rippability classification system considers the combined utilization of the rock and equipment properties, as well as expert opinion. Fuzzy set theory was chosen mainly because it deals well with uncertainty in the choice of variables. Although there are apparent sharp or discontinuous boundaries in existing classification systems, practically most of the factors involved in the ripping process are less well defined and boundaries are more blurred (or fuzzy) or uncertain in nature. Also by means of fuzzy logic it is possible to eliminate bias or subjectivity. The validity of the proposed system was checked by the comparison against existing classification systems and direct ripping production values obtained at studied sites. It is seen that by means of fuzzy logic, the uncertainties are reduced and biased usage of the final ratings that appear in alternative systems are efficiently dealt with.

3D Modeling of Ripping Process
Basarir, Hakan; Karpuz, Celal; Tutluoglu, Levent (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-01-01)
Due to environmental constraints and limitations on blasting, ripping as a ground loosening and breaking method has become more popular than drilling and blasting method in both mining and civil engineering applications. The best way of estimating the rippability of rocks is to conduct direct ripping runs in the field. However, it is not possible to conduct direct ripping runs in all sites using different dozer types. Therefore, the utilization of numerical modeling of ripping systems becomes unavoidable. A...
Preliminary estimation of rock mass strength using diamond bit drilling operational parameters
BASARIR, H.; Karpuz, Celal (2016-03-03)
In many mining engineering applications such as prospecting, development, production and grouting, diamond bit drilling is widely used due to high penetration rate, core recovery and its ability to drill with less deviation. It has been well known that the operational parameters of diamond bit drilling are closely related with rock mass strength properties. One of the most widely discussed subjects in drilling is the possibility of using diamond drill bit operational parameters for preliminary estimation of...
A process modeling approach for micro drilling of aerospace alloys with a waterjet guided laser system
Subasi, Levent; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Yaman, Ulaş (2022-04-01)
Laser drilling is a preferred method to make cooling holes on gas turbine parts. Although it is a fast process, there are some quality issues. Waterjet guided laser (WJGL) is a hybrid process, in which a laser beam is coupled with and guided through thin cylindrical waterjet. Pressurized water in this novel process provides focusing, cooling and cleaning of the machining zone, eliminating undesired side effects of the laser. The process can be conveniently used for micro drilling operations on aerospace jet...
Application of artificial neural networks to predict the downhole inclination in directionally drilled geothermal wells
Burak, Tunç; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2018)
Drilling directionally through naturally fractured geothermal reservoirs is a challenging task due to unexpected changes in inclination and azimuth of the well axis, which causes inefficient weight on bit transfer, decrease in penetration rate, increasing the risk of stuck pipe and problems in while running casings. To predict the sudden changes in inclination while drilling, a back propagation, feed forwarded multi layered artificial neural network (ANN) model, which uses drilling data collected from 12 J-...
A Comparative study of cuttings transport performance of water versus polymer-based fluids in horizontal well drilling
Allahvirdizadeh, Payam; Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Kuru, Ergun; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
High drilling fluid circulation rate is often needed for effective transportation of cuttings in horizontal and extended reach wells, which may not be always achievable due to the risk of fracturing the rock by increased bottom hole dynamic pressure and also limit of pumps capacity. Keeping the bottom hole pressure low enough while increasing the flow rate is, therefore, a major challenge in horizontal well drilling operations. A potential solution to this problem would be to use drag reducing additives in ...
