Binary and ternary mixtures of alpha-tocopherol (alpha T), cholesterol and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in the form of multilamellar liposomes have been investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Investigation of frequencies, bandwidths and band shapes of CH2 stretching and scissoring bands indicate that the effect of alpha T is dominant in comparison with cholesterol and alpha T decreases the interaction of cholesterol with phospholipid membranes.

IR and turbidity studies of vitamin E-cholesterol-phospholipid membrane interactions
Severcan, Feride; Kazanci, Nadide; Baykal, Ülkü; Süzer, Şefik (Portland Press Ltd., 1995-8-1)
Binary and tertiary mixture of α-tocophenol, cholesterol and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine in the form of multilamellar liposomes were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared and visible spectroscopy. Results of the FTIR and turbidity experiments indicate that α T decreases or diminishes the effect of cholesterol on the frequency and the bandwidth of the C-H stretching, CH2 scissoring and C=O stretching bands in FTIR spectra and the turbidity measurements (recorded as absorbance values at 440 nm) in pho...
FTIR spectroscopic characterization of irradiated hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.)
Dogan, Ayca; Siyakus, Galip; Severcan, Feride (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-01)
Radiation induced molecular changes in macromolecular components of hazelnut tissues were investigated by mid-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Irradiation dose of 1.5 kGy (low) and 10 kGy (high) were applied. The changes in frequency, signal intensity and intensity ratio of IR bands revealed that the unsaturated lipid concentration increased for low dose treated samples whereas it decreased and peroxidation appeared at high dose treatment. The low dose irradiation treatment, slightly increase...
FTIR and turbidity studies of fish oil-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine model membrane interactions
Severcan, Feride; Bayari, S; Karahan, D (Elsevier BV, 1999-05-04)
The temperature induced effects of fish oil on dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) model membranes (fish oil/lipid ratio: 2% w/w) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) smd UV/Visible spectroscopic techniques. In FTIR study the C-H and C=O stretching modes were investigated. The results of the FTIR study reveals that fish oil changes the physical properties of the DPPC multilamellar liposomes by broadening the phase transition profile and increasing the bandwidth of the CH2 stretching ban...
SVM-based detection of distant protein structural relationships using pairwise probabilistic suffix trees
Ogul, Hasan; Mumcuoğlu, Ünal Erkan (2006-08-01)
A new method based on probabilistic suffix trees (PSTs) is defined for pairwise comparison of distantly related protein sequences. The new definition is adopted in a discriminative framework for protein classification using pairwise sequence similarity scores in feature encoding. The framework uses support vector machines (SVMs) to separate structurally similar and dissimilar examples. The new discriminative system, which we call as SVM-PST, has been tested for SCOP family classification task, and compared ...
FLUORESCENCE DEPOLARIZATION IN NONLINEAR MOLECULAR PAIRS
GULEN, D (Elsevier BV, 1991-09-15)
The time evolution of the degree of fluorescence depolarization of a nonlinear molecular dimer has been investigated on the basis of a newly introduced nonlinear stochastic Liouville equation. Examples of the effects of the interplay of nonlinearity with nonadiabaticity and thermal dissipation have been provided to serve as a guide to experimental observations.
