In this paper, two-level and three-level voltage source inverters (2/3L-VSIs) with popular pulse width modulation (PWM) methods are investigated in terms of their output (ac-side) voltage and current ripple spectral characteristics and waveform quality properties such as peak-to-peak ripple, rms ripple, and weighted total harmonic distortion. As the switching frequency and the filter size influence the output waveform quality, the inverter efficiency (loss) constraint on the switching frequency, and the size constraint on the filter are also taken into consideration. The waveform quality properties and power converter losses are characterized in normalized form for all possible VSI topology and PWM method pairs and the utilization of characterization results are illustrated through 20 kVA and 100kVA grid connected photovoltaic inverter application examples. The performance results are evaluated and comparisons provided. The performance advantage of advanced topologies and PWM methods and their matched pairs is shown. The study aids understanding the 2/3L-VSI output waveform quality attributes and establishes analytical and algorithmic design guidelines for inverter design.

Output voltage control of a four-leg inverter based three-phase UPS utilizing stationary frame resonant filter banks
Hava, Ahmet Masum (2007-09-05)
An all scalar PWM and control approach for the four-leg inverter based three phase transformerless UPS is proposed. The output voltage of each phase is controlled independently and its controller is formed by a stationary frame resonant filter bank accompanied with proportional control and output capacitor current based active damping loops. The resonant filter bank consists of the fundamental component controller and one controller for each dominant harmonic. The simple to implement scalar control method e...
Performance characteristics of the reduced common mode voltage Near State PWM method
Un, Emre; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2007-09-05)
The Near State PWM (NSPWM) method, which has low common mode voltage/current is proposed for three-phase voltage source inverter drives. The method is described and its voltage linearity, output current ripple, DC bus current ripple, common mode voltage and output line-to-line pulse patterns are thoroughly studied and compared with classical PWM methods. The theory, simulation, and laboratory experiments illustrate that NSPWM has low common mode voltage, results in less common mode current, has low switchin...
Performance Characteristics of the Reduced Common Mode Voltage Near State PWM Method
Un, E.; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2009-07-01)
The Near State PWM (NSPWM) method, which has low common mode voltage and low common mode current, is proposed for three-phase voltage source inverter drives. The method is described and its voltage linearity, output current ripple, DC bus current ripple, common mode voltage and output line-to-line pulse patterns are thoroughly studied and compared with classical PWM methods. The theory, simulation, and laboratory experiments illustrate that in the high modulation index operating range NSPWM has superior ove...
High Performance Harmonic Isolation and Load Voltage Regulation of the Three-Phase Series Active Filter Utilizing the Waveform Reconstruction Method
Sentuerk, Osman S.; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2008-10-09)
This paper develops the Waveform Reconstruction Method (WRM) for high accuracy and bandwidth signal decomposition of voltage harmonic type (V-type) three-phase diode rectifier load voltage into its harmonic and fundamental components, which are utilized in the Series Active Filter (SAF) control algorithms. The SAF compensated system utilizing WRM provides high performance load harmonic voltage isolation and load voltage regulation at steady-state and during transients compared to the system utilizing the sy...
High Performance Harmonic Isolation By Means of The Single-phase Series Active Filter Employing The Waveform Reconstruction Method
Senturk, Osman S.; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2009-09-24)
This paper proposes the Waveform Reconstruction Method (WRM), which is utilized in the single-phase Series Active Filter's (SAF's) control algorithm, in order to extract the load harmonic voltage component of voltage harmonic type single-phase diode rectifier loads. Employing WRM and the line current sampling delay reduction method (SDRM), a single-phase SAF compensated system provides higher harmonic isolation performance and higher stability margins compared to the system using conventional synchronous re...
