ENGINEERING STUDENTS' UNDERSTANDINGS AND ATTITUDES PERTAINING TO SUSTAINABILITY

2011-07-06
The present study aimed to determine engineering students' familiarity and current understandings of sustainability as well as their attitudes toward sustainable development. 'A Survey of University Students' Views on Sustainability' originally developed by Kagawa (2007) was administered to a total of 341 engineering students at Middle East Technical University. The results of descriptive statistics showed that engineering students could not develop an adequate understanding of sustainability. Moreover, there existed some knowledge gaps in their conceptualizations of different aspects of sustainability. Engineering students declared sustainability as mostly related with environmental aspect of this term while neglecting social and economic development. On the other hand, engineering students had favorable attitudes toward sustainable development.

IMPLICATIONS FOR A GREEN CURRICULUM APPLICATION TOWARD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Şahin, Elvan; Teksöz, Gaye (2009-01-01)
The aim of present study was two-fold: (1) to determine university students' familiarity and understandings of 'sustainable development', (2) to examine their attitudes toward sustainable development, environmental values, and their behaviors toward sustainable life styles. The data collected by on-line administration of a questionnaire to 958 university students during February-June of 2008 were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results reflected that majority of the participants declared thems...
Green STEM application for developing 6th graders’ awareness, knowledge and skills on heat insulation and sustainability
Sönmez Aydın, Ayşe; Teksöz, Gaye; Department of Science Education (2020-9)
In this study, it is aimed to determine the effect of environmental STEM application on students' environmental awareness, knowledge and scientific skills. Within the scope of the sixth grade science course, an E-STEM course was designed and implemented on the relationship between thermal insulation and the sustainable use of natural resources in line with engineering practices. 56 students attended the lesson, and the effectiveness of the lesson was measured using pre-post tests, experiment worksheet...
Engineering-based modelling experiences of elementary gifted students: An example of bridge construction
Karatas-Aydin, Firdevs Iclal; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2023-03-01)
Background: Integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in elementary classrooms has gained more attention with the current educational reforms. In this integration, finding ways to improve STEM knowledge and develop appropriate learning activities, and instructional strategies have been a challenge for educators. Although the similarities between gifted and engineering education have been emphasized, they have been not fully considered. Purpose: This study attempted to show how STEM...
GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS AS A SILENT PREDICTOR OF RESPONSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR
Teksöz, Gaye; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (2009-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the regional differences in students' awareness, perception, optimism and responsibility development toward environment. The data used for the study was obtained from the one produced by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006 and comprised of the Turkish sample of 4942 fifteen year-old-students (2290 girls and 2652 boys) attending 160 schools across 78 provinces and 7 geographical regions. The data were statistically analyzed by using freq...
Achieving Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Early Childhood Education Through Critical Reflection in Transformative Learning
Feriver, Şebnem; Olgan, Refika; Teksöz, Gaye (Springer, Cham, 2019-08-01)
The central role of education in creating a more sustainable future has been already recognized by educators and policy-makers alike. This chapter argues that this can only be truly achieved through the efforts of teachers in implementing an “education of a different kind,” a general educational shift that seeks to encompass a converging transformation of the priorities and mindsets of education professionals. In this regard, the professional preparation of teachers, as the leading actors in shaping childre...
