© 2020 American Society of Civil Engineers.Although complexity and risk are inherent characteristics of megaconstruction projects, existing project management approaches fail to incorporate complexity-based thinking into risk management. Complexity is usually considered as the source of risk events, along with uncertainty. However, prevailing risk management practices are oriented toward only handling the uncertainty. The lack of integration between the complexity and other risk-related concepts leads to unrealistic project risk assessments and the formulation of imperfect management strategies. The aim of this research is to explore the relationship between complexity and risk in detail and propose an integrated risk assessment approach. For this purpose, a mixed-methods research approach was adopted to collect data via semistructured interviews and survey questions. Data obtained from 11 megaconstruction projects carried out by Turkish contractors were analyzed in two ways. Quantitative findings served to verify the relationship between complexity and risk in numerical terms, whereas qualitative findings were utilized to develop a framework that explains the nature of this relationship. The conceptual framework represents the links between complexity and risk in megaconstruction projects, together with uncertainty and management strategies. The existence of causal relations between these concepts may constitute a significant challenge during the risk assessment. Therefore, an integrated risk assessment process (IRAP) was proposed so that megaproject practitioners could develop better risk management plans. The findings of this research were based on megaconstruction projects, but they may also apply to other types of projects.

Identification of Risk Paths in International Construction Projects Using Structural Equation Modeling
Eybpoosh, Matineh; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2011-12-01)
The major aim of this research is to demonstrate that causal relationships exist among various risk factors that necessitate identification of risk paths, rather than individual risk factors, during risk assessment of construction projects. International construction projects have more complex risk-emergence patterns because they are affected by global and foreign country conditions and project-related factors. Identification of a network of interactive risk paths, each of which initiated from diverse vulne...
Integrated Approach to Overcome Shortcomings in Current Delay Analysis Practices
Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2015-04-01)
Many factors, such as unforeseeable events, managerial and financial problems of contractors, insufficient technical capacity of site teams of contractors or Consultants, and so on, may lead to delays in construction projects. Proper analysis of compensability and quantum of a delay event is of prime importance. Any delay analysis application can be considered as a result of the combination of contract documents, scheduler, record-keeping mechanism at the site, communication among project participants, dela...
A knowledge-based risk mapping tool for cost estimation of international construction projects
Yildiz, Acelya Ecem; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Ercoskun, Kerem; Alten, Selcuk (Elsevier BV, 2014-07-01)
Effective risk assessment and management is critical for success in international construction projects. This paper proposes a knowledge-based risk mapping tool for systematically assessing risk-related variables that may lead to cost overrun in international markets. The tool uses an ontology that relates risk and vulnerability to cost overrun [1] and a novel risk-vulnerability assessment methodology [2] to estimate potential risk paths that may emerge in international construction projects. The tool has b...
Development of Fragility Curves for Single-Column RC Italian Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Analysis
Perdomo, Camilo; Monteiro, Ricardo; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Informa UK Limited, 2020-05-07)
The main objective of this study is to assess the accuracy and suitability of Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) in the development of analytical damage fragility curves for seismic risk assessment of large portfolios of Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges. Seven NSP approaches, from widely used single-mode conventional pushover-based approaches to the more rigorous multi-mode conventional or adaptive pushover-based procedures are implemented. By systematically comparing fragility curve estimations in terms of...
Context-Dependent Construction Conflict Management Performance Analysis Based on Competency Theory
Altuncan, Izel Unsal; Tanyer, Ali Murat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2018-12-01)
Construction project environments are shaped by uncertainty and complexity; therefore, conflict situations that lead to time and cost overruns are rather frequent. However, no empirical studies conducted so far have analyzed conflict management performances of individuals on a context-dependent basis. This paper proposes a performance assessment methodology for conflict management that integrates two different approaches from other disciplines: hypothetical situations and competency theory. The approach ana...
