Hand-making musical instruments with children is a widespread crafts activity, and also a strategy to overcome the shortage of musical materials in preschools in Turkey. In this paper, hand-making musical instruments in preschools in Turkey is investigated as alternative to ready-made musical instruments in terms of their strengths and weaknesses, by gathering opinions and insights of 10 preschool educators as experts through semi-structured interviews about the making and using phases of handmade musical instruments. Süner, Sedef; Ünlü, Canan Emine; Department of Industrial Design (2012)

Akkoc, Can; Sethares, William A.; Karaosmanoglu, M. Kemal (University of California Press, 2015-04-01)
"WHEN I WAS A KID, THE ELDERS IN THE VILLAGE COULD TELL THE MAKAM OF A PIECE JUST BY LISTENING." While interviewing performers, enthusiasts, and experts in traditional Turkish taksims (improvisations), variations of this comment were made many times. Some of the respondents claimed to be able to identify the makam of a taksim, but others believed that this ability might now be a lost art. This paper documents a series of experiments (based on caricaturized or skeletonized taksim-like creations) designed to ...
Design for performability in nylon strung acoustic guitars
Korkmaz, Alkın; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Department of Industrial Design (2017)
Mastery on musical instruments is an acquired ability, often gained by the musician's lifelong commitment to practise for reaching high musical expression. Although, a concrete definition of virtuosity has not been introduced yet, it would be wise to suggest that, it is affected by the playability of a musical instrument. Playability, as a concept, can be described qualitatively or quantitatively. However, literature has random and shallow descriptions rather than coherent and unified definitions. This PhD ...
