Imbalance in the composition of trace metals, recognized to be essential to normal human homeostasis, besides the accumulation of potentially toxic or nonessential trace metals, may cause disease. Thus, there is a need for their analysis in cancerous and noncancerous human tissues to examine the relationship between cancer and these elements. Trace metal concentrations including Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mg, and Ca in both malign and benign prostate samples were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The tissues were digested by using microwave energy. In contrast to the literature data for zinc, the concentrations of calcium and zinc in the malign human prostate were found to be significantly higher than those in the benign human prostate (p < 0.05 for both metals). Similarly, the concentrations of iron, nickel, and magnesium in the malign prostate were also found to be higher than those in the benign prostate (p less than or equal to 0.1). Therefore, it is understood that more studies are needed regarding the increase or decrease in the metal (particularly Ca and Zn) concentrations of malign prostate samples.

Cyclization of RGD Peptides by Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling
Kemker, Isabell; Schnepel, Christian; Schroeder, David C.; Marıon, Antoıne; Sewald, Norbert (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2019-08-22)
Halogenated L- or D-tryptophan obtained by biocatalytic halogenation was incorporated into RGD peptides together with a variety of alkyl or aryl boronic acids. Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling either in solution or on-resin results in side chain-to-tail-cyclized RGD peptides, for example, with biaryl moieties, providing a new dimension of structure-activity relationships. An array of RGD peptides differing in macrocycle size, the presence of D-amino acid, N-methylation, or connectivity between the indole moiet...
New Steroidal 4-Aminoquinolines Antagonize Botulinum Neurotoxin Serotype A in Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Derived Motor Neurons in Postintoxication Model.

The synthesis and inhibitory potencies against botulinum neurotoxin serotype A light chain (BoNT/A LC) using in vitro HPLC based enzymatic assay for various steroidal, benzothiophene, thiophene, and adamantane 4-aminoquinoline derivatives are described. In addition, the compounds were evaluated for the activity against BoNT/A holotoxin in mouse embryonic stem cell derived motor neurons. Steroidal derivative 16 showed remarkable protection (up to 89% of uncleaved SNAP-25) even when administered 30 min postin...
2-Chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone derivative of quercetin as an inhibitor of aldose reductase and anti-inflammatory agent

The ability of flavonoids to affect multiple key pathways of glucose toxicity, as well as to attenuate inflammation has been well documented. In this study, the inhibition of rat lens aldose reductase by 3,7-di-hydroxy-2-[4-(2-chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone-3-yloxy)-3-hydroxyphenyl]-5-hydroxy-chromen-4-one (compound 1), was studied in greater detail in comparison with the parent quercetin (compound 2). The inhibition activity of 1, characterized by IC50 in low micromolar range, surpassed that of 2. Selectivity i...
STUDIES ON METAL RESISTANCE SYSTEM IN KLUYVEROMYCES-MARXIANUS
YAZGAN, A; Özcengiz, Gülay; ALAEDDINOGLU, NG (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1993-08-01)
Through preliminary plate tests, Kluyveromyces marxianus was found to be much more resistant to toxic heavy metals compared to a CUP1R strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Specific growth rate and maximum dry weights affected by increasing metal concentrations were determined to obtain precise patterns of resistance. Metal biosorption was also monitored during the course of growth in synthetic media containing respective metals at 0.5 mM final concentration. Although Zn- and Co-binding was negligible, as muc...
Multifaceted Transport Characteristics of Nanomedicine: Needs for Characterization in Dynamic Environment
Özçelikkale, Altuğ; Han, Bumsoo (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2013-06-01)
Nanomedicine for cancer, where nanoparticles (NPs) are used to deliver drugs, imaging agents, and heat to tumors, shows great potential of improved therapeutic outcomes. In spite of promising early stage results, its clinical efficacy is still significantly limited due to complex transport barriers in vivo. These transport barriers are associated with tumor microenvironment, which is highly complex and heterogeneous and varies spatiotemporally. Thus, in order to improve the in vivo efficacy of nanomedicine,...
