Until recently, historical development of the Ottoman guilds has been explained exclusively with the decline of the Ottoman economy. Some historians have recently rejected this traditional Eurocentric viewpoint and maintained that the historical evolution of these organizations was conditioned primarily by the local conditions and dynamics. In line with the same critical approach, the current article focuses on four major historical developments and argues that the response of the Ottoman guilds to these developments varied considerably from one setting to another, depending on local conditions and dynamics.

Kaplan, Ferhat; Ertuğrul, Kürşad; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2007)
The main topic of this study is determining the role of the Young Ottomans in mentality transformation in the Ottoman Empire from the traditional one to a modern one. Their proposals aim to change three patterns of the Ottoman state and society. The relation between state and the individual is the first issue. They tried to create an Ottoman citizenry, enhanced with freedom and political rights, from a reaya. In the second step they imagined a modern society. Their proposals, which imply a secular system, a...
The implementation of the Ottoman land code of 1858 in eastern Anatolia
Gözel, Oya; Boztemur, Recep; Department of History (2007)
The nineteenth century was an era that great centralization and codification attempts were realized in the Ottoman Empire. One of these attempts was the Ottoman Land Code of 1858, which put various land regulations throughout the empire into a standard code. But this standard Code gave different results when applied to different regions which had their own characteristic features. Eastern Anatolia, which had an autonomous position since its incorporation to the Ottoman Empire, was also in the scope of the L...
Mimar Kemalettin Bey (1870-1927)
Yavuz , Yıldırım (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1981)
The initial phase of nationalism in Turkish architecture is known to have covered those turbulent years between 1909-1930 that saw the fall of the Ottoman Empire as well as the dawn of the Turkish Republic. Locally known as; "The First Period of National Turkish Architecture", these two decades were to witness the fervent struggles of a set of young Turkish architects who opposed the western influences on traditional Ottoman architecture, monopolized by foreign and minority experts for the past hundred year...

Orbay, Kayhan (2014-01-01)
The present study looks at the financial history of the waqf of Muradiye in Edirne, one of the largest waqfs in the Balkans, in the first half of the 17th century. In some years, the harvest in the waqf villages was bad and grain prices went up due mainly to local natural disasters. However, the waqf did not go through a period of financial crisis to the extent which disturbed its regular functioning and ceased its charitable activities and services. Short-term financial difficulties that might last more th...
Contributions of the Ottoman Empire to the construction of Modern Europe
Palabıyık, Mustafa Serdar; Yurdusev, Ahmet Nuri; Department of International Relations (2005)
This thesis aims to analyze the contributions of the Ottoman Empire to the construction of modern Europe in the early modern period. Conventional historiography generally argues that the Ottoman Empire contributed to the emergence of the modern European identity only through acting as the ءother̕ of Europe. This thesis, however, aims to show that such an analysis is not enough to understand the Ottoman impact on the European state system. Moreover, it argues that the Ottoman Empire contributed to the constr...
