Right-wing political parties representing political Islam and ethnic nationalism have historically always been strong in Nevşehir. This thesis aims to reveal how Turkishness is discursively constructed and reproduced by everyday actors from different political positions in Nevşehir. For this purpos...
Challenging the image of Turkish women: travel accounts of female authors 1762-1935
Ezer, Özlem; Acar, Feride; Department of Gender and Women's Studies (2002)
This thesis brings to light the image of Turkish women over time as it is depicted mostly in the travel accounts and the memoirs of Western and Turkish women. As such, it attempts to contribute to women's history and to analyse travel writing from a gender-sensitive perspective. The works covered here were written between lS^O centuries. Included are the works of Western female writers (Lady Montagu, Grace Ellison and Marc Helys) who traveled to Turkey as well as Turkish women who wrote their impressions of...
NEGOTIATED BOUNDARIES: IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL ATTACHMENTS AMONG THE TURKS OF BULGARIA
Kaytan, Özge; ZIRH, BESİM CAN; Department of Sociology (2021-10)
This thesis analyzes negotiated identity strategies of the Turks of Bulgaria in the two different national settings. The existence of the Turks of Bulgaria has been a problem since Bulgaria won independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. Although discriminatory attitudes towards Turks continued throughout the history, the state policy of the assimilation of the Turkish minority peaked in 1980s. The assimilation policy resulted in the migration of Turks in 1989 with high numbers, which was described as a m...
In search for the demos: an existentialist dialectical view of nomos and phusis
Oktaykan, Can Berk; Okyayuz, Mehmet; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2021-9-17)
The thesis is propelled towards a rethinking of the preponderant tenets of an existentialist dialectical conception of totalizing projects undertaken by different parts of social totalities. With an overriding interest in reconstruing the present human potentialities that are afforded by the late capitalist relations of domination, production and reproduction, the ontological premises and epistemological preconditions that enable this theorization of praxis are unraveled. Taking his cue from the Adornian mo...
