Wireless Measurement of Elastic and Plastic Deformation by a Metamaterial-Based Sensor
Ozbey, Burak; DEMİR, Hilmi Volkan; Kurç, Özgür; ERTÜRK, VAKUR BEHÇET; ALTINTAŞ, AYHAN (2014-10-01)
We report remote strain and displacement measurement during elastic and plastic deformation using a metamaterial-based wireless and passive sensor. The sensor is made of a comb-like nested split ring resonator (NSRR) probe operating in the near-field of an antenna, which functions as both the transmitter and the receiver. The NSRR probe is fixed on a standard steel reinforcing bar (rebar), and its frequency response is monitored telemetrically by a network analyzer connected to the antenna across the whole ...
Broadband Impedance Transformation by Defected Dielectric on Microstrip Lines
Kaya, Tevfik; Nesimoglu, Tayfun (2018-11-02)
In this work, a different approach to achieve a desired characteristic impedance value on microstrips is presented. In standard microwave circuits using microstrip lines, the dielectric thickness is same and uniform across the whole circuit. In this paper, it is proposed to modify the dielectric thickness to achieve a certain design goal by creating variations in the characteristic impedance of the microstrip transmission line without changing the width of the line. The proposed approach is applied to a mul...
Wireless power transfer with bidirectional telemetry for active implantable medical devices
Avan, Onur; Gençer, Nevzat Güneri; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2017)
This thesis presents a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for powering implantable medical devices (IMDs).In order to make IMDs smaller and longer life devices primary batteries are replaced with rechargeable ones for the last two decades. Consequently, WPT systems are implemented for IMD’s. Electromagnetic induction is the most preferred and safety proven method among existing WPT methods. However, loose coupling inherent in these systems limits the implant depth and increases the battery recharge time. ...
Communication Coverage in Wireless Passive Sensor Networks
Bereketli, Alper; Akan, Ozgur B. (2009-02-01)
System lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is inversely proportional to the energy consumed by critically energy-constrained sensor nodes during RF transmission. In that regard, modulated backscattering (MB) is a promising design choice, in which sensor nodes send their data just by switching their antenna impedance and reflecting the incident signal coming from an RF source. Hence, wireless passive sensor networks (WPSN) designed to operate using MB do not have the lifetime constraints of convention...
Passive damping and seismic isolation steel devices with displacement-dependent hardening
Dicleli, Murat (null; 2018-02-02)
In this paper, a summary of analytical and experimental studies into the behaviour of a new hysteretic damper and a seismic isolator designed for seismic protection of structures is presented. The Multi-directional Torsional Hysteretic Damper (MRSD) and its isolator version MARTI (Multi-Directional Adaptive Torsional Isolator) are patented inventions in which a symmetrical arrangement of identical cylindrical steel cores is so configured as to yield in torsion while the structure experiences planar movement...
