The purpose of this study is to explore high school students' images toward the physicists. Also, this study investigates whether any changes of these images occur among grade levels. For this aim, "Characteristics of a Physicist" questionnaire (CPQ) was developed by researchers. This questionnaire was completed by 220, 9th and 12th grade high school students. Convenient sampling was drawn from the high schools in Cankaya district of Ankara, Turkey. As a research methodology, quantitative and qualitative analysis were used. Themes and patterns were identified based on students' responses. Suggestions and implications were also discussed. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The effect of peer instruction on high school students' achievement and attitudes toward physics
Eryılmaz, Hülya; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
This study aimed to explore the effectiveness one of the interactive engagement method which is peer instruction enriched by concept test on students' achievement and attitudes toward physics. In this study two types of teaching were used. These are; (1) Peer Instruction enriched by concept test, and (2) Traditional Instruction. For this study, Physics Attitude Test (PAT), Physics Achievement Test (PACT), Observation Checklist (OC), Teaching/Learning Materials were developed. Physics Attitude Test, Physics ...
Analysis of Middle School Students' Visions of Nature
Varlıoğlu, Gül Sena; Şahin, Elvan; Department of Mathematics Education (2022-9-2)
The present study aims to determine middle school students' visions of nature consisting of images of nature (1), values of nature (2), and their image of human-nature relationship (3). The data of the study were obtained by the administration of Turkish version of Visions of Nature scales (Van den Born, Lenders, De Groot, & Huijsman, 2001) and drawings about how human-nature relationship should be as a measuring instrument to 903 students from selected four middle schools throughout Hassa distric...
Exploring the Effects of Science Writing Heuristic Approach on 8th Grade Students Metacognition
Tucel, Tuğçe; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Öztekin, Ceren (2015-09-04)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach on middle school students' metacognition. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental research design, the non-equivalent control group post-test only design was used with the aim to compare the experimental and the comparison groups mean difference with respect to dependent variables. 60 eight grade students with a mean age of 14 years in two classes selected from one public school in an urban area. One class was ra...
A case study on middle school students' visions of nature
Başer, Ceren; Şahin, Elvan; Department of Science Education in Mathematics and Science Education (2021-2-5)
The purpose of the study is to investigate middle school students’ visions of nature including images of nature, values of nature and images of human-nature relationship. Participants were selected from middle school students living in a city center in Turkey by using purposive sampling method. Using qualitative case study design, the data were obtained from the students through semi-structured interviews along with the supportive tools such as guided-imagery technique, draw-and-explain technique and card s...
The relationship between eighth grade students' nature of science understanding and their informal reasoning on socioscientific issues
Irmak, Nesibe Fatıma Nur; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2021-8-02)
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between eighth grade students’ nature of science understanding and their informal reasoning on socioscientific issues. The study was performed with 414 8th grade middle school students in four different public middle schools of Turkey in Ankara, Altındağ. In the present study, correlational research approach was used. Background information about participants was collected by personal information questionnaire. The participants’ nature of science (NO...
