Polymerization of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCPH) was achieved through the thermal decomposition of the copper and cobalt complexes of TCPH with N-containing ligands [N-methyl imidazole (NMIz) and 3,5-dimethyl pyrazole (DMPz)). The structural analysis of the complexes was performed by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass (MS), UV-VIS, diffuse reflectance (DRS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibility balance and elemental analyses. Polymerization was achieved either in solid state or in melt, and the polymers were characterized by FTIR, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, DSC, and viscosity measurements. The effects of the temperature and time dependencies of %Conversion on polymer synthesis were investigated. The cobalt complexes (having higher decomposition temperatures) were more stable than copper complexes (decomposing at lower temperatures). Thermal stability with respect to N-ligand shows that the complexes with NMIz are more stable than DMPz complexes of the same metal. The highest molecular weights (Mw) were achieved at the end of 3 hr of polymerization for C1 at 170 degreesC, C2 at 120 degreesC, and C4 at 150 degreesC. The longer time at lowest conversion leads to highest Mw of C1 at 125 degreesC at the end of 24 hr, C2 at 90 degreesC at the end of 72 hr and at 100 degreesC at the end of 48 hr.

Synthesis and Characterization of Conducting Copolymers of Bisphenol A-Diglycidyl Ether with Thiophene Side-Groups and Pyrrole
Sahmetlioglu, Ertugrul; Varol, Ramazan; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yuruk, Huseyin (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
Copolymers of bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether with thiophene side-groups and pyrrole were synthesized by electrochemical polymerization. Bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether with thiophene side-groups (DGEBATh) was obtained from the reaction between bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and thiophene-3-acetic acid. The syntheses of copolymers of DGEBATh and pyrrole were achieved electrochemically using three different supporting electrolytes, p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and tetrabutylam...
X-ray and mass spectral analysis of poly phenylisocyanate obtained by complex base catalyst
Usanmaz, Ali; Cevik, NN (Informa UK Limited, 2003-01-01)
The polymerization of phenylisocyanate in bulk and in solution of THF by complex base (CB), NaNH2/(CH3)(3)CONa catalyst under vacuum was previously reported. The polymer obtained was fractionated by washing and extracted with different solvents. Polymer fractions were shown to be highly crystalline by X-ray analysis. Different fractions have similar crystalline structure with some modifications in cell parameters of primitive monoclinic unit cell. Mass spectral analysis gave valuable information for the cha...
KINETIC-STUDIES IN THE ELECTROINITIATED POLYMERIZATION OF N-VINYLCARBAZOLE AND RELATED CONDUCTING POLYMER COMPOSITES
ELIBOL, H; HACIOGLU, B; Akbulut, Ural; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Informa UK Limited, 1994-01-01)
Electrochemical polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) on platinum electrodes was studied. Effects of concentration, electrode area, polymerization potential, and solvent on the polymerization rate were discussed. Insulating and conducting polymers of NVC can be simultaneously prepared depending on the electrolysis conditions. The insulating PNVC cannot only be converted into a conducting one but can also be blended with other conducting polymers such as polythiophene and polypyrrole. Soluble insulating p...
Synthesis and characterization of conducting graft copolymers based on oligophenols
Sahmetlioglu, Ertugrul; Arikan, Ufuk; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yuruk, Huseyin; Mart, Hasan (Informa UK Limited, 2006-10-01)
Oligo-2-aminophenol (OAF) was synthesized with oxidative polycondensation of 2-aminophenol and hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous alkaline medium at 80 degrees C. Oligo-2-aminophenol with thiophene side groups (TOAF) was obtained by the reaction of OAF and thiophene-3-acetic acid. Graft copolymers of TOAF and pyrrole were synthesized by electrochemical polymerization in p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA)/water medium. Characterization of the graft copolymer (TOAF-g-Py), was carried out by combination of techniques...
Effect of calcium carbonate addition on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride
ÇAMURLU, HASAN ERDEM; SEVİNÇ, NACİ; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
Effect of CaCO3 on formation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was investigated by holding CaCO3 free and CaCO3 added activated carbon-boric oxide mixtures under nitrogen atmosphere at 1500 degrees C for 30-120 min. Amount of CaCO3 addition was varied in the range of 0-50 wt.% of the initial mixture. Products were characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, FT-IR analysis, quantitative chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and BET specific surface area analysis. It was observed that calcium carb...
