Four single-effect, basin type solar stills were designed, constructed and tested. Three stills had a glass cover of different thicknesses (3, 5, 6 mm) while the fourth cover was plastic. The still with the thinnest glass cover had shown the highest production rates, up by 15.5%. Empirical equations were obtained to express the dependency of the yield on the ambient temperature and solar radiation. Also, software was prepared to solve the governing equations numerically so that the effects of various parameters on the output could be investigated. For one of the glass covered stills, the measured yield was compared with the prediction.

Modelling, transient simulation and parametric study of parabolic trough collector with thermal energy storage
Akba, Tufan; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Baker, Derek Keıth; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2014)
In this thesis, a mathematical model of a parabolic trough collector field with a two-tank molten salt thermal energy storage is developed. The model is built in TRNSYS and by using MatLab, novel valve and thermal energy storage control algorithms are implemented. The model is sensitive to transient states inside the components and variations in weather and demand. Optimum parabolic trough collector length is determined for different insolation values to show the relation between direct normal insolation an...
Modelling and performance analysis of linear fresnel collector for process heat generation for ice cream factory in Konya
Singh, Rahul; Baker, Derek Keıth; Tarı, İlker; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2017)
In this thesis, a linear Fresnel collector has been designed to supply solar heat for industrial process. Firstly, optical analysis using ray tracing is done to determine the effects of collector’s parameters, such as height of receiver, mirror width and profile, gap between adjacent rows and slope deviation. Afterwards, one-dimensional thermal model is presented which predicts surface temperatures of receiver components and heat loss. The results obtained from both optical and thermal studies are then benc...
Simulation Studies of Hole Textured and Planar Microcrystalline Silicon Solar Cell at Different Zenith Angle
Zainab, Sana; Hussain, Shahzad; Altinoluk, Serra H.; Turan, Raşit (2017-09-23)
Efficiency of solar cell greatly depends on its interaction with input solar irradiance. For highly efficient solar cell, absorption of input light should be maximum at all angles. Different surface texturing techniques like pyramid texturing, cone texturing, pillar texturing have been used to increase absorption of light in solar cell. Micro-hole Surface texturing is getting popular in absorption of solar radiation at higher zenith angle. In this paper, effect of varying zenith angle on hole textured solar...
Numerical modeling of wave diffraction in one-dimensional shoreline change model
Baykal, Cüneyt; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
In this study, available coastal models are briefly discussed and under wind waves and a numerical shoreline change model for longshore sediment transport based on “one-line” theory is developed. In numerical model, wave diffraction phenomenon in one-dimensional modeling is extensively discussed and to represent the irregular wave diffraction in the sheltered zones of coastal structures a simpler approach based on the methodology introduced by Kamphuis (2000) is proposed. Furthermore, the numerical model re...
Performance tracking & characterization of commercial solar panels
Oğulgönen, Celal Güvenç; Kıncal, Serkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2014)
This study aims to characterize the performance of different types of commercial solar panels in terms of the meteorological parameters such as irradiance, temperature, pressure, relative humidity with the technologies of mono and polycrystalline along with thin film, by evaluating the performance data collected with a Daystar MT-5 I-V curve tracer. The approach to this characterization is a comprehensive data collection scheme where solar panel performance is monitored side-by-side with an exhaustive list ...
