Particle Swarm method based optimum design algorithm for unbraced steel frames is presented. The Particle Swarm method is a numerical optimization technique that simulates the social behavior of birds, fishes and bugs. In nature fish school, birds flock and bugs swarm not only for reproduction but for other reasons such as finding food and escaping predators. Similar to birds seek to find food, the optimum design process seeks to find the optimum solution. In the particle swarm optimization each particle in the swarm represents a candidate solution of the optimum design problem. In the optimum design algorithm presented the design constraints are imposed in accordance with LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design, American Institute of Steel Construction). In the design of beam-column members the combined strength constraints are considered that take into account the lateral torsional buckling of the member. The algorithm developed selects optimum W sections for beams and columns of unbraced frame from the list of 272 W-sections list. This selection is carried out such that design constraints imposed by the LRFD are satisfied and the minimum frame weight is obtained. The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated considering a number of design examples. (C) 2011 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2010-11-01)
This study presents applications of a simulated annealing integrated solution algorithm to the optimum design of single-span steel truss bridges subjected to gravity loadings. In the optimum design process of a bridge the members are sized simultaneously as the coordinates of the upper chord nodes are determined such that the least design weight is attained for the structure. The design constraints and limitations are imposed in accordance with serviceability and strength provisions of ASD-AISC (Allowable S...

Optimum design of steel lattice transmission line towers using simulated annealing and PLS-TOWER
Tort, Cenk; Sahin, Serkan; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2017-01-15)
This paper presents a new optimization tool for automated design of steel lattice transmission line towers in real-world engineering practice. This tool has been developed by integrating the simulated annealing (SA) optimization algorithm into the commercial PLS-TOWER software to optimize steel lattice towers for minimum weight according to ASCE 10-97 design specification using both size and layout design variables. In this context, a novel two-phase SA algorithm is specifically developed and compared with ...

Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Saka, Mehmet Polat (2010-06-01)
Metaheuristic search techniques strongly employ randomized decisions while searching for solutions to structural optimization problems. These techniques play an increasingly important role for practically solving hard combinatorial problems from various domains. Over the past few years there has been considerable success in developing metaheuristic search algorithms as well as randomized systematic search methods for obtaining solutions to discrete programming problems. This paper examines minimum weight de...
