In composite solid propellants, low-molecular-weight species such as burning rate catalysts, plasticizer, etc. which migrate into liner and thermal insulation layers during curing and storage invariably result in poor mechanical and ballistic properties of the propellants. In the present study, the migration of the burning rate catalyst, acetyl ferrocene, was investigated spectrophotometrically (UV-visible) by evaluating the extent of hindrance to such migration after applying a barrier (liner) of various crosslink densities between the additive (HTPB-TDI-plasticizer-acetyl ferrocene) and nonadditive (HTPB-TDI) gumstocks replicating the propellant and insulating layer, respectively. Enhancing the crosslink densities of liner via a trifunctional aziridine crosslinking agent inhibited migration. The aging of additive gumstock was done at 60 degrees C and its mechanical properties and extent of acetyl ferrocene migration were also evaluated and analyzed. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Investigation of acetyl ferrocene migration from hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene based elastomers by means of ultraviolet-visible and atomic absorption spectroscopic techniques
Unver, A; Dilsiz, N; Volkan, Mürvet; Akovali, G (Wiley, 2005-06-05)
Migration and leakage of some mobile components in rocket propellant produces an inhomogeneous composition region at which migration takes place, which can lead to premature detonation, changes in ballistic characteristics, and so on. It is, therefore, important to be able to predict the behavior of low-molecular-weight mobile additives and to control the leakage of them from the propellant. At this point, our chief interest was to study the magnitude of the migration and to understand the factors that infl...
Effect of a carbon black surface treatment on the microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/carbon black composites
Koysuren, Ozcan; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur; Secmen, Mustafa; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (Wiley, 2008-07-05)
A surface treatment was applied to carbon black to improve the electrical and microwave properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based composites. Three different formamide solutions with 1, 2, and 3 wt % concentrations were prepared to modify the surface chemistry of carbon black. Microwave properties such as the absorption loss, return loss, insertion loss, and dielectric constant were measured in the frequency range of 812 GHz (X-band range). Composites containing formamide-treated carbon black e...
Studies on the modification of interphase/interfaces by use of plasma in certain polymer composite systems
Akovali, G; Dilsiz, N (Wiley, 1996-04-01)
Calcium carbonate and carbon fiber surfaces were modified by use of a series of plasma polymers at different selected plasma conditions, and the effect of surface modification, mainly on the mechanical properties of composite systems prepared, was investigated. The matrices for the composite systems employed were polypropylene and epoxy, for the chalk and C fiber, respectively. Mechanical and thermal studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures revealed that inclusion surfaces, being independent ...
Synthesis and characterization of waterborne and phosphorus-containing flame retardant polyurethane coatings
Celebi, F; Aras, L; Gündüz, Güngör; Akhmedov, IM (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2003-09-01)
Phosphorus-containing flame retardant water-dispersed polyurethane coatings were produced by incorporating different amounts of a phosphorus compound onto the polyurethane main chain. The novel phosphorus containing compound (phosphorus phenyl dihydroxy) was synthesized in three steps using benzaldehyde, pentaerythritol, phenyl phosphonic dichloride, and acetic acid.
Thermal characterization of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and GAP-based binders for composite propellants
Selim, K; Özkar, Saim; Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 2000-07-18)
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to investigate the thermal behavior of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and GAP-based binders, which are of potential interest for the development of high-performance energetic propellants. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and decomposition temperature (T-d) of pure GAP were found to be -45 and 242 degrees C, respectively. The energy released during decomposition (Delta H-d) was measured as 485 cal/g. The effect of th...
