In this paper, a heuristic approach for tool selection in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) is presented. The proposed approach utilizes the ratio of tool life over tool size (LIS) for tool selection and allocation. The proposed method selects tool types with high LIS ratios by considering tool alternatives for the operations assigned to each machine. The performance of the method is demonstrated in sample problems as static examples, as well as in a simulation study for further analysis. This study also presents a survey of several approaches related to loading and tool allocation problems in FMS, highlights the importance of tooling, and discusses the practical aspects of tool-oriented decision-making. An extended framework, which expands on the LIS concept, is also presented.

System identification with generalized orthonormal basis functions: an application to flexible structures
Nalbantoglu, V; Bokor, J; Balas, G; Gaspar, P (Elsevier BV, 2003-03-01)
This paper presents an application of a multi-input/multi-output identification technique based on system-generated orthonormal basis functions to a flexible structure. A priori information about the poles of the system, part of which corresponds to the natural frequencies of the structure, is used to generate the orthonormal basis functions. A multivariable model is identified for the experimental flexible structure by using these orthonormal basis functions. It is shown that including a priori knowledge o...
Integrating flexible process plans with scheduling in flexible manufacturing systems
Saygin, C; Kilic, SE (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1999-01-01)
This paper highlights the importance of integration between process planning and scheduling in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). An effective integration increases the potential for enhanced system performance and enhanced decision making. A framework that integrates flexible process plans with off-line (predictive) scheduling in FMS is presented The flexibility in process planning, including process flexibility, sequence flexibility, and alternative machine tools, is discussed. The proposed framework c...
Verification of Modular Diagnosability With Local Specifications for Discrete-Event Systems
Schmidt, Klaus Verner (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2013-09-01)
In this paper, we study the diagnosability verification for modular discrete-event systems (DESs), i.e., DESs that are composed of multiple components. We focus on a particular modular architecture, where each fault in the system must be uniquely identified by the modular component where it occurs and solely based on event observations of that component. Hence, all diagnostic computations for faults to be detected in this architecture can be performed locally on the respective modular component, and the obt...
An improved method for inference of piecewise linear systems by detecting jumps using derivative estimation
Selcuk, A. M.; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni (Elsevier BV, 2009-08-01)
Inference of dynamical systems using piecewise linear models is a promising active research area. Most of the investigations in this field have been stimulated by the research in functional genomics. In this article we study the inference problem in piecewise linear systems. We propose first identifying the state transitions by detecting the jumps of the derivative estimates, then finding the guard conditions of the state transitions (thresholds) from the values of the state variables at the state transitio...
A finite field framework for modeling, analysis and control of finite state automata
Reger, Johann; Schmidt, Klaus Verner (Informa UK Limited, 2004-09-01)
In this paper, we address the modeling, analysis and control of finite state automata, which represent a standard class of discrete event systems. As opposed to graph theoretical methods, we consider an algebraic framework that resides on the finite field F-2 which is defined on a set of two elements with the operations addition and multiplication, both carried out modulo 2. The key characteristic of the model is its functional completeness in the sense that it is capable of describing most of the finite st...
