Spatio-temporal aerosol trace metal concentrations and sources in the Levantine Basin of the Eastern Mediterranean
Koçak, Mustafa; Kubilay, N; Herut, B (2004-05-01)
The current study considers the spatial and temporal variability in aerosol trace metal concentrations (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn) in the Levantine Basin of the Eastern Mediterranean, utilising an extensive sample library (n = 621) collected between 1999 and 2001, at two coastal sites located at the northern, Erdemli (Turkey) and southeastern, Tel Shikmona (TS, Israel), region of the Basin. A critical evaluation of the datasets from the two locations was presented. Enhanced concentrations of Al (1.7 x)...
Trace element and major ion composition of wet and dry depositon in Ankara Turkey
Kaya, Güven; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (1997-12-01)
Daily, wet-only precipitation samples collected over a two year period were analyzed for SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, H+, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Al, Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn, V and Ni. Weekly dry-deposition samples collected on petri-dishes over the same period were analyzed only for major ions. Concentrations of ions and elements in Ankara precipitation are comparable with concentrations reported in literature for other urban areas. However, the wet deposition fluxes are the lowest among literature values, owing to small annual ...
Trace elements partitioning during co-firing biomass with lignite in a pilot-scale fluidized bed combustor
Gogebakan, Zuhal; Selçuk, Nevin (2009-03-15)
This study describes the partitioning of 18 trace elements (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, Tl, V, Zn) and 9 major and minor elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, S, Si, Ti) during co-firing of olive residue, hazelnut shell and cotton residue with high sulfur and ash content lignite in 0.3 MWt Middle East Technical University (METU) Atmospheric Bubbling Fluidized Bed Combustor (ABFBC) test rig with limestone addition. Concentrations of trace elements in coal, biomass, limestone, bottom...
TRACE-ELEMENT COMPOSITION OF THE BLACK-SEA AEROSOLS
HACISALIHOGLU, G; BALKAS, TI; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; HERMAN, DH; OLMEZ, I; TUNCEL, G (1991-01-01)
Shipboard aerosol samples collected from the Black Sea atmosphere were analysed for Al, Ca, Mg, Ti, V, Cl, I, Mn and Na, by using instrumental neutron activation technique. Concentrations of elements were intermediate between continental rural sites and remote marine sites. Back-trajectory calculations showed a general easterly flow. Observed enrichments of elements can be attributed to crustal, marine and anthropogenic sources. The (Mn)ner/(V)ner ratio showed differences with trajectory groups. The average...
Particulate matter (PM10) in Istanbul: Origin, source areas and potential impact on surrounding regions
Koçak, Mustafa; Zarmpas, P.; Im, U.; Bougiatioti, A.; Yenigun, O.; Mihalopoulos, N. (2011-12-01)
Water-soluble ions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, C2O4-, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+,Ca2+), water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) and trace metals (Al, Ca, Ti, V. Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) were measured in aerosol PM10 samples above the megacity of Istanbul between November 2007 and June 2009. Source apportionment analysis using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) indicates that approximately 80% of the PM10 is anthropogenic in origin (secondary, refuse incineration, fuel oil and s...
