Squaraines are a group of fluorescent dyes and pigments derived from squaric acid and dialkylanilines well known in applications such as photoreceptors, organic solar cells, optical recording media, and non-linear optics. Their very promising spectral properties, long wavelength absorption and emission, and high absorptivity and quantum yields have not been exploited so far in relation to optical sensor design. They exhibit excellent solubility in sol-gel matrices, and the ligand is an integral part of the fluorophore pi system, which makes the molecule a fluoroionophore. In this work, potassium-sensing agent, bis[4-N-(1-aza-4,7,10,13,16-pentaox acyclooctadecyl)-3,5-dihydroxyphenyl] squaraine has been used for potassium sensing in a sol-gel matrix. The spectrofluorimetric response of dye-doped tetraethyl ortosilicate (TEOS) film after exposure to certain concentrations of K+ has been investigated, and 62% of relative signal change was achieved. The dynamic working range of the sensor membrane has been found between 10(-9) and 10(-6) M K+, in other terms from nanomolar to micromolar levels, which is an advantage over flame emission spectroscopy, in view of detection limit. The sensor is fully reversible within the dynamic range and the response time (tau(90)) is found to be 2 min under batch conditions. The cross-sensitivity of the molecule to Na+, Ba2+, Ca2+, and NH4+ was also tested in separate solutions.

Synthesis of New Flexible Coumarin Dimers for Sodium and Potassium Differentiation
TAN, DUYGU; Akdağ, Akın (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-01)
Using fluorescence to detect biologically relevant metals has been studied extensively due to its rapid and low detection limit ability. Sodium and potassium differentiation is significant in diagnosis of many medical conditions. For this, we designed coumarin dimers as flexible fluorescent probes using ethylene glycol units for differentiation of sodium and potassium. To our best knowledge, use of these easy-to-synthesize coumarin dimers linked through ethylene glycol units are first in the literature. In ...
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy via gold nanostars
Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (Wiley, 2009-01-01)
Anisotropic metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have unique optical properties, which lend them to applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. Star-shaped gold (Au) NPs were prepared in aqueous solutions by the seed-mediated growth method and tested for Raman enhancement using 2-mercaptopyridine (2-MPy) and crystal violet (CV) probing molecules. For both molecules, the SERS activity of the nanostars was notably stronger than that of the spherical Au NPs of similar size. The Raman en...
Light harvesting with Ge quantum dots embedded in SiO2 or Si3N4

Germanium quantum dots (QDs) embedded in SiO2 or in Si3N4 have been studied for light harvesting purposes. SiGeO or SiGeN thin films, produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, have been annealed up to 850 degrees C to induce Ge QD precipitation in Si based matrices. By varying the Ge content, the QD diameter can be tuned in the 3-9 nm range in the SiO2 matrix, or in the 1-2 nm range in the Si3N4 matrix, as measured by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, Si3N4 matrix hosts Ge QDs at higher d...
Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Lasing in Colloidal Nanoplatelets
Guzelturk, Burak; Keleştemur, Yusuf; Olutas, Murat; Delikanli, Savas; Demir, Hilmi Volkan (2014-07-01)
Colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) have recently emerged as favorable light-emitting materials, which also show great potential as optical gain media due to their remarkable optical properties. In this work, we systematically investigate the optical gain performance of CdSe core and CdSe/Cds core/crown NPLs having different Cds crown size with one- and two-photon absorption pumping. The core/crown NPLs exhibit enhanced gain performance as compared to the core-only NPLs due to increased absorption cross section ...
Silver Nanoparticles Added Polymer Film Prepared by Electrochemical Route for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Applications
Khadim, Raisan; Uzun, Ceren; Cihaner, Atilla; Kaya, Murat (The Electrochemical Society, 2019-03-02)
A simplemethod for the fabrication of stable and highly active surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate by exploiting the optical properties of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and organizational characteristics of the polymer is presented. Homogeneous distribution ofAgNPs is achieved with the usage of poly (4,7-di-2,3-dihydrothieno [3,4-b] [1,4] dioxin-5-yl-2,1,3 benzoselena diazole) (PESeE) film coated on the indium tin oxide glass (ITO) surface. The obtained structure ensured the emergence of a...
