The basic reseach on the surface sulfonation of polypropylene (PP) is very important for design of surfaces for higher functionalization. For this purpose, liquid-phase sulfonation of polypropylene surfaces at various temperatures and different time periods was performed using concentrated sulphuric acid. The physical and chemical changes produced by the sulfonation on the polypropylene surfaces were determined by contact angle measurements, mechanical analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both surface polarity and wettability of PP films were improved by sulfonation at low temperatures for short time periods; however, sulfonation at longer times, or higher temperatures, caused degradation of PP films. All sulfonated film samples had lower yield stress and stress at break. (c) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2008

Preparation and Characterization of Low Density Polyethylene/Ethylene Methyl Acrylate Glycidyl Methacrylate/Organoclay Nanocomposites
Coskunses, Fatma Isik; Yılmazer, Ülkü (Wiley, 2011-06-05)
The effects of organoclay type, compatibilizer, and the addition order of components during melt-blending process on the morphology and thermal, mechanical, and flow properties of ternary nanocomposites based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated. As a compatibilizer, ethylene/methyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate (E-MA-GMA), as organoclays Cloisites (R) 15A, 25A, and 30B were used. All samples were prepared by a corotating twin screw extruder, followed by injection molding. The highest incre...
Bond strength of a silicone soft lining material to poly(methyl methacrylate) resin treated with maleic anhydride and its terpolymers
Turgut, Mehmet; Bolayir, Giray; Dogan, Orhan Murat; Keskin, Selda; Dogan, Arife; Boztug, Ali (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
This study investigated the effectiveness of surface treatment of Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base resin on tensile bond strength between PMMA/silicone-based soft liner. A total of 25 specimens were fabricated and assigned into five groups (n = 5). The surfaces of PMMA were treated with maleic anhydride, maleic anhydride-styrene-vinyl-acetate, n-butylmaleate-styrene-vinyl-acetate, or n-pentamaleate-styrene-vinyl-acetate prior to Primo adhesive primer application and silicone liner placement. T...
Synthesis and characterization of epoxy based nanocomposites
Basara, G; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Bayram, Göknur (Wiley, 2005-11-01)
Epoxy-clay nanocomposites were synthesized to examine the effects of the content and type of different clays on the structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (epoxy) was reinforced by 0.5-11 wt % natural (Cloisite Na+) and organically modified (Cloisite 3013) types of montmorillonite. SEM results showed that as the clay content increased, larger agglomerates of clay were present. Nano-composites with Cloisite 30B exhibited better dispersion and a lower degree...
Kinetics of polyurethane formation between glycidyl azide polymer and a triisocyanate
Keskin, S; Özkar, Saim (Wiley, 2001-07-25)
Kinetics of the polyurethane formation between glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and a polyisocyanate, Desmodur N-100, were studied in the bulk state by using quantitative FTIR spectroscopy. The reaction was followed by monitoring the change in intensity of the absorption band at 2270 cm-l for NCO stretching in the IR spectrum, and was shown to obey second-order kinetics up to 50% conversion. The activation parameters were obtained from the evaluation of kinetic data at different temperatures in the range of 50-...
PREPARATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF CO-DOPED HYDROXYAPATITE BIOMIMETIC COATINGS ON PRETREATED Ti6Al4V ALLOY
Hacioglu, Tugce; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Abbas, Sherif; Evis, Zafer (World Scientific Pub Co Pte Lt, 2020-11-01)
In this study, bismuth + carbonate co-doped and pure hydroxyapatites (HAp) were coated on rough surfaces of Ti6Al4V plates by biomimetic method. Prepared samples were investigated with SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD and ICP. Furthermore, mechanical scratch tests, profilometer tests and in vitro cell studies were carried out. In order to explore the antibacterial characteristics of the coating, the survival rate of a bacteria named Staphylococcus epidermidis was determined. Structural investigations showed that HAp nuc...
