Identifying the effectiveness of a web search engine with Turkish domain dependent impacts and global scale information retrieval improvements
Fidan, Güven; Demirörs, Onur; Yöndem, Meltem Turhan; Department of Information Systems (2012)
This study investigates the effectiveness of a Web search engine with newly added or improved features in Web search engine architecture. These features can be categorized into three groups: The impact of link quality and usage information on page importance calculation; the use of Turkish stemmer for indexing and query substitution; and, the use of thumbnails for Web search engine result visualization. As Web search engines have become the primary means for finding and accessing information on the Internet...
Using Google analytics, card sorting and search statistics for getting insights about metu website’s new design: a case study
Dalcı, Mustafa; Taşkaya Temizel, Tuğba; Department of Information Systems (2011)
websites are one of the most popular and quickest way for communicating with users and providing information. Measuring the effectiveness of website, availability of information on website and information architecture on users‟ minds have become key issues. Moreover, using these insights on website‟s new design process will make the process more user-centered. v There is no consensus on how to define web site effectiveness, which dimensions need to be used for the evaluation of these web sites and which pro...
Understanding cognitive presence in an online and blended community of inquiry: Assessing outcomes and processes for deep approaches to learning
Akyol, Zehra; Garrison, D. Randy (2011-03-01)
This paper focuses on deep and meaningful learning approaches and outcomes associated with online and blended communities of inquiry. Applying mixed methodology for the research design, the study used transcript analysis, learning outcomes, perceived learning, satisfaction, and interviews to assess learning processes and outcomes. The findings for learning processes and outcomes indicated that students in both online and blended courses were able to reach high levels of cognitive presence and learning outco...
Second Chance: A Hybrid Approach for Dynamic Result Caching in Search Engines
Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Barla Cambazoglu, B.; Ulusoy, Ozgur (2011-01-01)
Result caches are vital for efficiency of search engines. In this work, we propose a novel caching strategy in which a dynamic result cache is split into two layers: an HTML cache and a docID cache. The HTML cache in the first layer stores the result pages computed for queries. The docID cache in the second layer stores ids of documents in search results. Experiments under various scenarios show that, in terms of average query processing time, this hybrid caching approach outperforms the traditional approac...
Pre Service Teachers Self Efficacy Beliefs in Relation to Educational Podcasting Integration and Educational Usage Self Efficacy
Çelik, Berkan; Yıldırım, Zahide (2016-03-21)
One of the Web 2.0 technologies that can contribute to teaching and learning process is podcasting technology. Being a part of a larger study, this study aims to investigate pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs in relation to educational podcasting before and after engaging in podcast development and presenting a subject in their field of study through podcasts. This research study utilized a non-experimental approach and convenience sampling method was used to select the participants. 25 pre-service...
