Water-soluble copolymers of methoxy polyethylene glycol acrylate (mPEGA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) were synthesized by free radicalic polymerization and evaluated as slump-retaining dispersant for cement particles. The slump-retaining effect of the synthesized copolymers was studied in terms of reaction pH, composition, and molecular weight of mPEG side chains. mPEG grafted copolymers (mPEGA-co-AMPS) were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR. In this study, dilute solution viscometry measurements were performed to compare the molecular weight effect on fluidity of the copolymers and mechanical properties of the mortar samples prepared by the copolymers were investigated to determine the flexural strength and compressive strengths. It was observed that the reaction pH had a noticeable effect on the molecular weight of the PEG-grafted samples thus causing a significant effect on fluidity. mPEGA-co-AMPS synthesized at a pH of 6 has given the highest fluidity result. Copolymers with mPEG side chains with a molecular weight of 1100 gave higher fluidity and viscosity average molecular weight values than the copolymers with mPEG 2000 side chains. Furthermore, for all the samples tested in this research, increase in molecular weight caused an increase in fluidity, however, a decrease in mechanical properties due to the different air contents of these copolymers.

Production of lightweight aerated alkali-activated slag pastes using hydrogen peroxide
Sahin, Murat; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan; Bayer, Özgür (Elsevier BV, 2018-08-30)
This study investigated the production of lightweight aerated alkali-activated slag pastes (LAAASP) using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution was used for the activation of slag. Physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of samples cured under different curing conditions were investigated. Various water-to-slag ratios (W/S) and H2O2 contents were used to explore the expansion mechanism of fresh mixtures and to investigate their effect on apparent density. ...
PREPARATION OF BLOCK-COPOLYMERS WITH MACROAZONITRILES AS THE INITIATOR
YURUK, H; ULUPINAR, S (Wiley, 1993-12-01)
Block copolymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide) prepolymer segments and methyl methacrylate were prepared. A stepwise procedure was first employed to prepare macro-azocarbamates by capping hydroxy-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide) with 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate and subsequently reacting this intermediate with 4,4'-azobis(4-cyano-n-pentanol)**. The resulting polymeric azocarbamates were used as free-radical initiators for the poly...
Determination of the elastic properties of amorphous materials: Case study of alkali-silica reaction gel
Moon, Juhyuk; Speziale, Sergio; Akgül, Çağla; KALKAN, BORA; Clark, Simon M; Monteiro, Paulo JM (Elsevier BV, 2013-12-01)
The gel formed during alkali-silica reaction (ASR) can lead to cracking and deterioration of a concrete structure. The elastic properties of the ASR gel using X-ray absorption and Brillouin spectroscopy measurements are reported. X-ray absorption was used to determine the density of the gel as a function of pressure, and the result yields an isothermal bulk modulus of 33 +/- 2 GPa. Brillouin spectroscopy was applied to measure isentropic bulk (24.9-34.0 GPa) and shear moduli (8.7-10.1 GPa) of the gel. The r...
Synthesis of special cement with fluidised bed combustion ashes
Selçuk Yüce, Nihal; Soner, I.; Selçuk, Emre (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2010-04-01)
Fluidised bed combustion (FBC) ashes containing a significant amount of free calcium oxide and calcium sulfate in addition to valuable inorganic acidic oxide ingredients such as silicon oxide, ferric oxide and aluminium oxide can be utilised as potential raw materials in the production of non-expansive belite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate cement, which is one of the special cement types having performance characteristics similar to those of ordinary Portland cement in addition to having lower energy requireme...
Synthesis of conducting copolymers of thiophene capped poly(ethylene oxide) with pyrrole and thiophene
Yildiz, Huseyin Bekir; Kiralp, Senem; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yagci, Yusuf; Ito, Koichi (Elsevier BV, 2006-11-10)
Thiophene capped poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was synthesized. Copolymerisations of PEO with pyrrole (Py) and thiophene (Th) were achieved in water-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and acetonitrile (AN)-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) solvent electrolyte couples via constant potential electrolyses. Characterisations of the samples were performed by NMR, cyclic voltammetry (CV), FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical conductivities were measured by the four-probe technique. PEO-co-PTh f...
