Fluidised bed combustion (FBC) ashes containing a significant amount of free calcium oxide and calcium sulfate in addition to valuable inorganic acidic oxide ingredients such as silicon oxide, ferric oxide and aluminium oxide can be utilised as potential raw materials in the production of non-expansive belite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate cement, which is one of the special cement types having performance characteristics similar to those of ordinary Portland cement in addition to having lower energy requirements and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) emissions during manufacture. Therefore, in the present study, the possibility of synthesising the above-mentioned energy-saving green cement was investigated by adding FBC ashes in various proportions to the raw meal. For this purpose, a raw meal composed of a mixture of limestone, bauxite and gypsum together with FBC bottom ash and baghouse filter ash was prepared. It was sintered in a laboratory-scale muffle furnace at temperatures of 1200, 1250 and 1300 degrees C for various holding times. The results of chemical and mineralogical analysis as well as microscopic examination revealed that FBC ashes have the potential to be used in the raw meal due to the formation of characteristic mineral phases of this type of cement, namely yeelimite, belite, ferrite and anhydrite, in the sample sintered at optimum temperature of 1250 degrees C for 60 min.

Laboratory production of calcium sulfoaluminate cements with high industrial waste content
Canbek, Ogulcan; Shakouri, Sahra; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan (Elsevier BV, 2020-02-01)
A drawback of conventional calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement production is the use of the costly raw material bauxite as a source of alumina to form the main clinker phase ye'elimite. Replacement of bauxite with industrial wastes can benefit CSA cements economically and environmentally. This study demonstrates the use of high amounts of red mud, a sulfate-rich/high-lime fly ash, and desulfogypsum as raw materials in producing CSA clinkers and cements with better mechanical performances than an all-natural...
Synthesis of copolymers of methoxy polyethylene glycol acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid: Its characterization and application as superplasticizer in concrete
Buyukyagci, Arzu; Tuzcu, Goezde; Aras, Leyla (Elsevier BV, 2009-07-01)
Water-soluble copolymers of methoxy polyethylene glycol acrylate (mPEGA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) were synthesized by free radicalic polymerization and evaluated as slump-retaining dispersant for cement particles. The slump-retaining effect of the synthesized copolymers was studied in terms of reaction pH, composition, and molecular weight of mPEG side chains. mPEG grafted copolymers (mPEGA-co-AMPS) were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR. In this study, dilute solution viscometry...
Production of lightweight aerated alkali-activated slag pastes using hydrogen peroxide
Sahin, Murat; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan; Bayer, Özgür (Elsevier BV, 2018-08-30)
This study investigated the production of lightweight aerated alkali-activated slag pastes (LAAASP) using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution was used for the activation of slag. Physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of samples cured under different curing conditions were investigated. Various water-to-slag ratios (W/S) and H2O2 contents were used to explore the expansion mechanism of fresh mixtures and to investigate their effect on apparent density. ...

Kaolin, one of the materials of major importance for the ceramic and paper industry, is also used in the construction industry as a raw material for the production of white cement clinker and, in the form of metakaolin, as an artificial pozzolanic additive for concrete. Metakaolin is a vital component of high-performance and architectural concrete; however, its application in regular concrete is very limited due to relatively high production costs. This report evaluates the performance of a low-cost metakao...
