This work presents a procedure for the design and analysis of a linear tubular switched reluctance generator for wave energy conversion. The generator is meant to be applied to a direct drive wave energy converter, namely a point absorber. The device is modeled according to wave climate conditions at Esposende site in the Portuguese coast. The procedure starts with statistical analysis of the local random ocean behavior in order to determine most likely values of occurrence for the wave parameters in question. Based on that, the generator is analytically designed. With the proper dimensions calculated, a numerical simulation is performed and the magnetic flux path and density values are determined.

This paper considers Dual Stator Spoke Array Vernier Permanent Magnet (DSSA-VPM) generator for the direct drive wind-electric energy conversion. The structure of the generator is described. Although how this design is optimized is not discussed, dimensions of the designed generator are given. In electrical machine design thermal performance is naturally of utmost importance. In this paper thermal performance of the design and how its temperature can be kept within the temperature limit imposed by its insula...
Design and implementation of a voltage source converter based statcom for reactive power compensation and harmonic filtering
Çetin, Alper; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
In this thesis, design and implementation of a distribution-type, voltage source converter (VSC) based static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) having the simplest converter and coupling transformer topologies have been carried out. The VSC STATCOM is composed of a +/- 750 kVAr full-bridge VSC employing selective harmonic elimination technique, a low-pass input filter, and a /Y connected coupling transformer for connection to medium voltage bus. The power stage of VSC based STATCOM is composed of water-co...
Design and implementation of a current source converter based active power filter for medium voltage applications
Terciyanlı, Alper; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
This research work is devoted to the design, development and implementation of a Current Source Converter (CSC) based Active Power Filter (APF) for Medium Voltage (MV) applications. A new approach has been proposed to the design of the CSC based APF for reducing the converter kVA rating considerably. This design approach is called the Selective Harmonic Amplification Method (SHAM), and is based on the amplification of some selected harmoniccurrent components of the CSC by the input filter, and the CSC contr...

In this study, an optimization procedure to design corrugated passive metallic reflectors for the fifth-generation millimeter wave (5G mm-wave) applications, as well as the fabrication and measurement of the designed reflectors, are presented. Such reflecting surfaces can be used as passive repeaters in both indoor and outdoor applications to change the field coverage by redirecting incident beams into desired directions with controllable power distributions. The design procedure includes a heuristic optimi...

Bağlan, Fuat Onur; Hava, Ahmet Masum; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this thesis a multifunctional DC/DC converter board will be developed for utilization as an educational experiment set in the switched-mode power conversion laboratory of power electronic courses. The board has a generic power-pole structure allowing for easy configuration of various power converter topologies and includes buck, boost, buck-boost, flyback, and forward converter topologies. All the converters can be operated in the open-loop control mode with a switching frequency range of 30-100 kHz and ...
