This study was conducted to determine the reciprocal effects for anther culture response in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using a set of 4 x 4 full diallel crosses. Both reciprocal and nuclear genetic effects were highly significant for anther culture response and useful for selection and breeding purposes. General combining ability (GCA) effects were predominant for all investigated anther culture traits. Also, significant differences for specific combining ability (SCA) effects were detected between reciprocal crosses. Although significant reciprocal differences for responding anther, callus number and green plant regeneration were recorded in some reciprocal crosses, there were no significant reciprocal differences for albino plant regeneration. The use of one parent as male or female could lead to change at the production of green plants from the F-1 hybrids and screening of inbred lines for response to anther culture, without reciprocal effects, could decrease the utilization of breeding material.

DNA fingerprinting and genetic characterization of Anatolian Triticum spp. using AFLP markers
Yildirim, Figen; Akkaya, Mahinur (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2006-08-01)
In this study, genetic analysis of Triticum spp. was carried out using AFLP markers. Six AFLP selective combinations were scored as presence and absence of bands for all the individual samples obtained from a single seed of each accession (70 accessions); T. baeoticum (21), T. monococcum (5), T. urartu (16), T. araraticum (7), T. dicoccoides (16) and T. dicoccon (5), resulting in 506 polymorphic AFLP bands. The phylogenetic tree showed two major clusters; one was composed of T. monococcum (AA) and T. baeoti...

Combination of elemental and protein studies along with molecular data using microsatellite markers may lead CO the better and realistic determination of relatedness between the varieties and their populations. In this study, the extent of diversity among five Turkish durum wheat cultivars and their populations has been assessed using seven microsatellite markers and the elemental analysis together with the differences in their protein content. In molecular analysis, total 23 alleles have been obtained amon...
Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity and respective gene expression during cold acclimation and freezing stress in barley cultivars
Kayihan, C.; EYİDOĞAN, FÜSUN; Afsar, N.; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; YÜCEL, MUSTAFA (Institute of Experimental Botany, 2012-12-01)
The transcript levels and activities of the superoxide dismutase isoenzyme (Cu/ZnSOD) were assessed in winter (Tarm-92) and spring (Zafer-160) barley cultivars during cold acclimation, freezing stress and after rewarming. Leaf Cu/ZnSOD activity and Cu/ZnSOD expression level were not significantly changed during cold acclimation. The Cu/ZnSOD expression increased evidently at mild freezing stress (-3 A degrees C; F1), while Cu/ZnSOD1 activity did not show any response and Cu/ZnSOD2 activity decreased continu...
Taxonomic study on the genus Eremopyrum (Ledeb.) Jaub. et Spach (Poaceae) in Turkey
Cabi, Evren; Doğan, Musa (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2010-07-01)
In this study, we examined whether a satisfactory infrageneric grouping in Eremopyrum (Ledeb.) Jaub. & Spach can be achieved with the help of cluster analysis based on external vegetative and floral morphological characters of specimens either gathered from the field or borrowed from various herbaria. Twenty morphological characters were chosen and scored for 36 populations representing the genus. The data were subjected to numerical taxonomic analyses, and a phenogram was obtained by applying Gower general...
Evaluation of photosynthetic performance of wheat cultivars exposed to boron toxicity by the JIP fluorescence test

The changes in growth and photosynthetic performance of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (Bolal-2973 and Atay-85) differing in their sensitivity to boron (B) toxicity were investigated under toxic B conditions. Eight-day old seedlings were exposed to highly toxic B concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 mM H3BO3) for 5 and 9 days. Fast chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics was determined and analysed using JIP test. Growth parameters, tissue B contents, and membrane damage were measured at two stress durati...
