Object. Epidural fibrosis is the scar tissue formed over the dura mater after a laminectomy. Extensive epidural fibrosis may be an important underlying cause of failed back syndrome. Pimecrolimus, an ascomycin derivative, is one of the new classes of immunomodulating macrolactams and was specifically developed for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. This study examined the preventive effects of the local application of pimecrolimus in minimizing spinal epidural fibrosis in a rat laminectomy model.

Object. The authors conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of mitomycin C (MMC) in preventing epidural fibrosis in rats which underwent craniectomy. Methods. Craniectomies were performed in the right frontoparietal region; after the procedure the animals had been divided in 2 groups of 10 each. Cotton pads soaked with 0.1mg/ml MMC or saline (control) were applied to the operative sites. Four weeks after craniectomy the rats were sacrificed, and epidural fibrosis was evaluated histologically. The d...

Effects of microwave and ultrasonic extraction methods on total phenolic content of nettle (Urtica diocia)
Ince, Alev Emine; Şahin, Serpil; Sumnu, Gulum (null; 2011-12-01)
Abstract. Effects of different extraction methods at different conditions on total phenolic content (TPC) of nettle (Urtica diocia) were investigated. Water was used as solvent. TPC analysis was performed according to Folin-Ciocalteu method. In microwave extraction, heating was achieved using microwaves at 407W power level. Effects was obtained as 1:30 solid-to-solvent ratio for 10min. Extraction was also performed conventionally at 1:30 solid-to-solvent ratio for 30min for comparison. There was no signific...
Development of an efficient immobilization matrix based on a conducting polymer and functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes: synthesis and its application to ethanol biosensors

Material modification is one of the hot topics recently. Hereby a novel functional monomer, 2-(4-nitrophenyl)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIPN), was synthesized for matrix generation through electrochemical polymerization. Its conducting polymer was successfully used for the biolayer construction in the biosensor preparation. The electrochemical and morphological properties were improved by the introduction of carboxylic acid functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs). Carboxylic a...
Characterization and modulation by drugs and other effectors of bovine liver microsomal flavin monoxygenase(fmo)
Başer, Deniz Fulya; Adalı, Orhan; Department of Biochemistry (2004)
The flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMO; E.C.1.14.13.8) are microsomal NADPH and oxygen-dependent flavoprotein enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a wide variety of xenobiotics, including drugs and environmental toxicants. Nucleophiles containing nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and selenium heteroatoms are the substrates of FMO. Bovine liver microsomal FMO enzyme activity was characterized using methimazole as substrate, which is a highly specific substrate for FMO. From 12 different bovine liver samples,...
