Children, who are likely to suffer adverse consequences of climate change, are expected to find out alternative strategies to struggle the mitigation and adaptation of climate change. Thus, education for sustainable development has been pointed out as an essential element of the global reaction to climate change permitting individuals gain with the necessary understandings, attitudes, values, and skills to combat climate change. Current Turkish middle school science education program have the vision which embraces the notion of sustainable development. In the current study, the concepts of greenhouse effect, global warming and climate change were examined within this program and textbooks by means of how these concepts may contribute to develop an understanding of sustainable development. From the grade level 5 to 8, several chapters related to the concepts of global warming and climate change were given in the textbooks. The scientific backgrounds of these concepts were elaborated compared to previous curricula. However, although UNESCO emphasized that every nation may choose their local needs as a context for education for sustainable development; the textbooks did not address any local climate change issue. Besides, no special emphasis was made on the interactions between these concepts and sustainable development. The objectives and content may be revised to emphasize the role of sustainable development within these concepts. Moreover, some local issues may be integrated into curricula so that children develop a sound understanding on climate change and sustainable development.

Prioritization and selection of climate change adaptation measures: a review of the literature
Dogulu, Nilay; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (2015-07-03)
Adaptation to climate change is key to reduce associated risks and develop climate resilient communities. Adaptation measures should be designed for both current and future impacts of climate change. Nevertheless, the inherent uncertainty in climate change and its impacts, and also the intrinsic complexity in climate change adaptation process present challenges in developing, planning, and effective implementation of appropriate adaptation strategies in many countries. Despite the improvements, it is due to...
A model for pre-service teachers' climate change awareness and willingness to act for pro-climate change friendly behavior: adaptation of awareness to climate change questionnaire
Dal, Burçkin; Alper, Umut; Ozdem-Yilmaz, Yasemin; Ozturk, Nilay; SÖNMEZ, DUYGU (2015-01-01)
Public awareness of the negative effects of climate change is vital since it leads to collective action for prevention and adaptation. However, investigations on to what extent people are aware of the climate change issue are rare in the literature. The present study reported the adaptation process of awareness to climate change questionnaire into Turkish, and tested the conceptual model of willingness to act for pro-climate change friendly behavior in Turkish context. For these purposes, the questionnaire ...
Exploring the Role of Future Perspective in Predicting Turkish University Students’ Beliefs About Global Climate Change
Ateş, Deniz; Teksöz, Gaye (2017-06-01)
AbstractRecent studies indicate that limited understanding about causes and its potential impacts of climate change and fault beliefs by people across different countries of the world including Turkey is a real challenge. Acceptance of climate change as a real threat, believing its existence, and knowing causes and consequences are very significant for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Therefore, exploring underlying factors shaping or affecting beliefs of people is needed for designing educational ...

This thesis aims at examining the climate risk and vulnerability levels of provinces by conducting a climate risk and vulnerability assessment at the national scale provincial level to respond to the immediate climat...
Comparison of BEST and LEED green building rating systems through cost based optimization
Uğurlu, Bengisu; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2020-1-25)
Buildings have significant effects on climate change due to vast resource consumption and pollution generation. Improving the effective use of limited resources and constructing environmentally friendly buildings are important in the realm of mitigations for climate change. Several countries have their green building rating systems tailored towards their regulations, distinctive climatic conditions, unique cultures and traditions, diverse building types and ages, or wide-ranging environmental, economic, and...
