Importance of simulation in the design of experimental tests

2018-07-13
Linear and Nonlinear finite element (FE) models of the steel H-pile specimens used in the ex-perimental test set up are developed using the computer program ANSYS to identify potential problems that may be encountered during testing and to improve the test apparatus. First, linear FE models of the steel H-pile specimens are built to determine maximum stress concentrations occurring in the HP sections and the steel base fixture used for fixing the pile to the testing frame. From these linear analyses results; the locations of stress concentrations in the HP sections are identified. Using these results, the test set up is modified to de-crease the stress concentrations. Then, nonlinear FE analyses of the steel H-pile specimens are repeated on the modified specimen model to observe the distribution of stresses and strains in the steel HP sections and the steel base fixture. Then, low cycle fatigue tests are conducted to investigate the fatigue life of steel H-piles subjected to thermal induced cyclic strains/displacements. In the experimental part, HP220x57 pile specimens are tested to estimate the low cycle fatigue life of steel H-piles as a function of large flexural strain cycles with various amplitudes. Using the FEM, comparisons between FE model predictions and experimental test results are made in terms of fatigue life in the steel H-pile specimens. Consequently, it is shown that nonlinear FEMs of the steel H-pile used in the experimental part should be used to identify potential problems that may be en-countered during testing and to improve the test apparatus if necessary.

Evaluation of cement mortars by ultrasound
Paksoy, Nesibe Gözde; Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
Ultrasonic testing of concrete is often used for the assessment of its uniformity, strength, modulus of elasticity, durability and etc. therefore, the related parameters of testing such as the transducer frequency, the specimen geometry and etc. are well-known. On the other hand, most of the concrete properties are affected by the cement and the mechanical as well as some durability properties of cements are determined through cement mortars. Applications of ultrasound on determining the properties of cemen...
Performance Analysis of a Micro-scale Model Helicopter Rotor in Hover Flight
Şahin, Mustafa; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2015-09-12)
This experimental study contains the design, production, test and evaluation of the test processes of a Micro-Scale Rotor Test-Rig. For the study, NACA 0012 airfoil section is selected as a rotor blade without a twist and a taper ratio. The tests cover the thrust and the torque relation with different blade pitch angles and RPM values.

SUER, Sila; Mehrabov, Amdulla; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat (Elsevier BV, 2009-03-01)
The bulk glass forming ability (BGFA) of Ti-Cu based multicomponent alloys has been evaluated via theoretical modeling and computer simulation studies based on a combination of electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation and the statistical thermodynamical theory of liquid alloys The. magnitude of atomic ordering energies, calculated by means of the electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation, was subsequently used for calculation of the key thermodynamic parameters...
Application of spring analogy mesh deformation technique in airfoil design optimization
Yang, Yosheph; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, an airfoil design optimization with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis combined with mesh deformation method is elaborated in detail. The mesh deformation technique is conducted based on spring analogy method. Several improvements and modifications are addressed during the implementation of this method. These enhancements are made so that good quality of the mesh can still be maintained and robustness of the solution can be achieved. The capability of mesh deformation is verified by...
INVESTIGATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF WINGLETS FOR HAWT ROTOR BLADES
Elfarra, Monier A.; Akmandor, I. Sinan; Sezer Uzol, Nilay (2011-03-25)
The main purpose of this paper is to optimize winglet geometry by using CFD with Genetic Algorithm and study its effects on power production. For validation and as a baseline rotor, the NREL Phase VI wind turbine rotor blade is used. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved and different turbulence models including the Spalart-Allmaras, k-epsilon Launder-Sharma, k-epsilon Yang-Shih and SST k-omega models are used and tested. The results of the power curve and the pressure distribution at dif...
