The Destruction of Monuments: An Analysis Urban Morphology of Diyarbakir/Suriçi

2019-08-23
Within the electoral period of 2015, the armistice between PKK(Kurdistan Workers’ Party) andTurkish state ended. Like many other regions of Kurdish provinces, Suriçi, a historical province of Diyarbakir located at the center of the city, became the venue of security operations and armed conflict by the Turkisharmy. Named as “ditches war” (hendek savaşları) Suriçibecame the main area of the conflict which was, to a great extent, resulted in many deaths and the ruinization of the province. Many times through the conflict period, curfew declared by the Turkish government and the state of emergency became the ordinary situation in the region. Resembling an urban war, space became one of the main agents of the conflict with its own morphology and historicity. As Lefebvre put into words, each society has its own spatiality and also centrality which reveals both possibilities and contradictions of the given situation. This centrality (or the spatial architectonics) asserts itself in the architecture or more accurately in the monument in which memory leaves its mark on the space. In that sense, this study, by using photos, reports, maps news, and interviews about Suriçi, will be an effort to examine the destruction of the rhetoric topoi (in other words, monumentalization of the mediocrity) of Suriçi withreference to Lefebvre’s concept of monument and tothe urbicide literature.

Modernism and the peasantry : the case of Turkey
Çaya, Sinan; Ecevit, Mehmet Cihan; Department of Sociology (2013)
The Turkish Republican Revolution followed the National Struggle for the independence of the remaining Turkish-Moslem sections of the former Ottoman State. The radical nature and the sudden occurrence of the following revolution caused the periphery of the country to accept all novelties only with reluctance and resistance. Indeed, the Turkish peasant does possess some collective traits, which are possible to distinguish him from town and city and even town dwellers. Turkey has been considered an agrarian s...

Öztürk, Duygu Canan; Ersoy, Melih; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2013)
The first election of the pro-Kurdish parties to the municipalities in Turkey was the 1999 local elections. It was the first time in Turkey that a legal political party representing the Kurdish movement overtook of a state institution ruling local power in the cities where Kurds live intensely. The fact that the pro-Kurdish parties have run the municipalities in Diyarbakır since 1999 has great effects on the space production in the city. This thesis mainly focuses on the socio-spatial practices of the pro-K...

Gelir, Fatma Senem; Özçoban Üstüner, Fahriye; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
Through this thesis, it is aimed to study the democracy understanding of the Welfare Party (the WP), which was closed down in 1998 by the decision of the Constitutional Court, and the Justice and Development Party (the JDP), which leaved the November 2002 general elections as the leading party and has still been running the country as the single party, in a comparative way. Since the foundation of the JDP, the founders have presented the JDP as a new political formation, which is different from the WP, with...
Gezi Başkaldırısı Ertesinde Kent Mekânı Ve Siyasal Alanın Yeni Dinamikleri
Şengül, Hüseyin Tarık (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2015-6-15)
Turkey has been undergoing a dramatic change fueled by the twin dynamics of commodification of commons and conservative authoritarianism by the AKP led government. Urban space has been at the hearth of this project which have created an immense conflict and a radical split in the society. Gezi uprising emerged as a reaction both to such policies which have been companied by increasing authoritarianism of the government and to the failure of the insitutional political field in responding to such divisive pol...
Party-level euroscepticism of the radical populist political parties in the european union member states: the cases of the united kingdom independence party (UKİP) and the coalition of the radical left (SYRİZA)
Özbey, Ebru Ece; Şenyuva, Özgehan; Department of European Studies (2016)
In this thesis, I investigate the strategic and ideological aspects of the Euroscepticisms of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) as examples of radical populist parties which have been on the rise in Europe for the last three decades –especially since the 2014 European Parliamentary elections. I contest the way these parties are represented in media and academia, which is often alarmist and devoid of nuance, and claim that deeming these parties as a t...
