There is a widespread assumption in economic geography and innovation economics that firms located in the samegeographic clusters benefit from being together and that proximity promotes knowledge externalities leading toinnovative activity. However, proximity provided by geographic clusters is by no means a guarantee of the developmentof interactions between firms located in them. Especially in an environment where technological developments in ICThas reshaped the meaning of distance, business behavior, and strategy of firms, whether spatial boundaries ofgeographic clusters still matter for firms in forming interactions with others is an important question. The aim of thispaper is to address this issue by examining interactions between high tech firms located in a technology park in Turkey. The results show that the geographical proximity provided by science and technology parks (STPs) is not a source ordriver for the formation of interactions between high tech firms. In fact, it is the match between the goals and needs ofthe firms and the structure of benefits of interaction that determines the significance of locational proximity for firms inSTPs. These results suggest that more focused polices and measures are needed to develop interactions between firmsin STPs or geographic clusters in order to ensure knowledge spillovers and innovatio

Foreign Direct Investment and Technology Spillovers in the Turkish Manufacturing Industry
Sonmez, Alper; Pamukcu, Mehmet Teoman (2013-01-01)
Technology spillovers from foreign to local firms in emerging economies are considered to be the most important channel through which Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) influences the host economy. Empirical evidence about the existence, magnitude, and direction of FDI-related spillovers in these countries is contradictory, pointing to the necessity of conducting more econometric studies using firm-level data. The authors conduct an econometric analysis to assess the impact of FDI-related horizontal technology...
Knowledge networks and cognitive communities in clusters: the case of ICT cluster of METU Technopolis and agricultural tools and machinery cluster of Konya
Yaşar, Suna Senem; Kayasü, Serap; Department of City and Regional Planning (2010)
Knowledge is defined one of the fundamental resources for development, competitiveness and power of firms, industrial clusters and regions. This thesis is focused on clusters as cognitive and learning systems. Clusters are the agglomerations where collective learning may take place. New knowledge is created and shared within the clusters...

Increasing role of services in competitive power and innovativeness of firms and industrial clusters
Eraydın, Ayda (2007-01-01)
The aim of this paper is to discuss the importance of different types of global services for industrial firms and clusters in terms of their economic competitiveness and innovative performance. The theoretical debates argue that globalization, deregulation and the new production organization make it necessary to use global services that are supplied easily with the help of new telecommunication technologies. The existing empirical studies provide some supporting evidence. However, they also indicate that gl...
Spatial dynamics of creative industries: The case of computer programming sector in Ankara
Durmaz Erçetin, Büşra; Kayasü, Serap; Department of City and Regional Planning (2022-11-11)
The development of cities and economies in the 21st century have been discussed through creative sectors. The Fordist mode of production, which was dominant until the 1970s, left its hegemony to the post Fordist mode based on flexible production and specialization. Widespread use of digital technologies and computerized production stand as one of the most prior features of this new post Fordist era. In the new era, based on knowledge and creativity, development have been undertaken by the sectors that can m...
