Building performance assessment models can become very complex and difficultto manage. The scope and amount of building components and performance data/knowledgecan get very extensive, and the complex object structures make the associations between themodel entities quite intricate. Such difficulties directly impact the visual representation. Thispaper discusses ways of managing this complexity in a visual representation, with the aim of making the user interaction with the model easier without reducing the complexity of themodel. Furthermore, we will elaborate on these problems with an exploration of specificcases, along with the explicit approaches and solutions to the problems delivered by theauthors. While these solutions are grounded in the context of building performanceassessment, they are more broadly applicable to complex, integrated models

Assessment of Software Process and Metrics to Support Quantitative Understanding: Experience from an Undefined Task Management Process
TARHAN, AYÇA; Demirörs, Onur (2011-06-01)
Software engineering management demands the measurement, evaluation and improvement of the software processes and products. However, the utilization of measurement and analysis in software engineering is not very straightforward. It requires knowledge on the concepts of measurement, process management, and statistics as well as on their practical applications. We developed a systematic approach to evaluate the suitability of a software process and its measures for quantitative analysis, and have applied the...
Determination of surface residual stresses in carburised AISI 8620 steel by the magnetic Barkhausen noise method
Kaleli, T.; Gür, Cemil Hakan (British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT), 2020-07-01)
Management of the residual stress state is vital for the design and production stages of carburised components in order to satisfy the technical requirements related to performance, fatigue behaviour and useful lifetime. This enforces the use of practical, reliable and time- and cost-effective stress measurement methods by manufacturers. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method in rapid non-destructive determination of surface residual stresses in carburise...
Evaluation of reference modeling for building performance assessment
Gürsel Dino, İpek (2014-04-15)
Lifecycle building performance assessment (LBPA) practices are being increasingly applied on existing buildings to ensure that performance requirements are fulfilled during building service-life. LBPA is a multi-disciplinary and information-intense process that requires computational tools for information management and decision support. We have previously developed a computational reference model (CLIP-Core) that supports various component-based LBPA practices. When CLIP-Core is considered to be used, it n...
Review of Residual Stress Measurement by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Technique
Gür, Cemil Hakan (2018-01-01)
Determination of residual stress state is important for quality, integrity, and service performance of the components and structures. Almost all manufacturing processes cause considerable amounts of residual stress; thus, any process or product design ignoring it involves a risk for distortion or early failure. Among the existing methods, the magnetic Barkhausen noise method has been gaining attention for measuring residual stresses nondestructively in ferromagnetic materials. It is sensitive to the interac...
Evaluating Efficiency of Big-Bang Big-Crunch in Benchmark Engineering Optimization Problems
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Erol, Osman Kaan (2011-06-01)
Engineering optimization needs easy-to-use and efficient optimization tools that can be employed for practical purposes. In this context, stochastic search techniques have good reputation and wide acceptability as being powerful tools for solving complex engineering optimization problems. However, increased complexity of some metaheuristic algorithms sometimes makes it difficult for engineers to utilize such techniques in their applications. Big-Bang Big-Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm is a simple metaheuristic op...
