This paper demonstrates the energy-neutral operation of a wireless sensor network of MicaZ Motes through electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting. The power drawn by Motes for microcontroller operation, data transmission, listening/reception and LED activation are measured. A custom electromagnetic harvester is designed, and experimental results of charging AA batteries that supply the device at 10 Hz vibration and 0.6 g acceleration are exhibited. When the duty cycle for the nodes, employing the standard ZigBee protocol, is appropriately adjusted, the energy harvested fully compensates for the energy used for the operation of the node.

Design and prototyping of second generation METU MEMS electromagnetic micro-power generators
Turkyilmaz, Serol; Külah, Haluk; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2010-12-01)
This paper presents an electromagnetic (EM) vibration to electrical power generator which can effectively harvest energy from low frequency external vibrations. The reported second generation MEMS energy scavenger module up-converts low frequency environmental vibrations before mechanical-to-electrical conversion. Power is generated through planar electromagnetic induction using a magnet on the low frequency actuation plane, and coils on the high frequency resonance plane. The proposed approach has been dem...
Towards a Vibration Energy Harvesting WSN Demonstration Testbed
Baghaee, S.; Ulusan, H.; Chamanian, S.; Zorlu, O.; Külah, Haluk; Uysal-Biyikoglu, E. (2013-09-25)
This paper presents initial results toward the implementation of a wireless sensor network (WSN) demonstration testbed powered up by vibration energy, as part of the E-CROPS project. The testbed uses MicaZ Motes, supplied by AA batteries. The power drawn by Motes in different modes of operation are measured. Design details of an electromagnetic harvester, and experimental results of charging AA batteries with this harvester at 10 Hz vibration generated in the laboratory, are presented.
A Self-Powered and Efficient Rectifier for Electromagnetic Energy Harvesters
Ulusan, Hasan; Zorlu, Ozge; Muhtaroglu, Ali; Külah, Haluk (2014-11-05)
This paper presents an interface circuit for efficient rectification of voltages from electromagnetic (EM) energy harvesters operating with very low vibration frequencies. The interface utilizes a dual-rail AC/DC doubler which benefits from the full cycle of the input AC voltage, and minimizes the forward bias voltage drop with an active diode structure. The active diodes are powered through an AC/DC quadrupler with diode connected (passive) transistors. The interface system has been validated to drive 22 m...

This paper presents a fully-integrated self-powered interface circuit for efficient rectification of the signals generated by vibration based low-voltage electromagnetic (EM) energy harvesters. The circuit utilizes an improved AC/DC doubler structure with active diodes to minimize the forward bias voltage drop for enhancing the rectifier efficiency. The comparators in the active diodes are powered internally by another passive AC/DC doubler with diode connected transistors. The performance is maximized thro...
A development tool for design and analysis of MEMS based EM energy scavengers
Turkyilmaz, Serol; Külah, Haluk; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2010-12-01)
This paper presents a development tool for estimating the performance of an electromagnetic (EM) vibration-to-electrical MEMS energy scavenger for low power mobile computing and wireless sensor applications. The tool takes design and excitation parameters as input, and estimates output voltage waveforms and power levels. It has been correlated against validation data, and used for early evaluation and design of new MEMS modules, which could not be optimized using off-the-shelf design packages. The tool was ...
