The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of the cooperatiye problem solving method (CPSM) and the individualistic problem solving method (IPSM) on seventh grade students' mathematical problem solving performance (MPSP). in this quasiexperimentalresearch study, seventh grade "percents unit" was covered. After analyzing the data by using the multivariate analysis of covariance it was found thatCPSM and IPSM groups had statistically significantly greater mean scores than the traditional method (TM) group with respect to MPSP. However, there was no significant mean difference between CPSM and IPSM groups with respect to MPSP.

Investigation of the effects of problem solving instruction on fifth grade students’ mathematical problem solving performance
Kanar, Özge; Bulut, Safure; Department of Mathematics Education (2022-2-04)
The primary purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of problem solving instruction on 5th grade students’ mathematical problem solving performance across the three time periods. Also, the other aim of the study was to examine the relationship between 5th grade students’ mathematical problem solving performance scores of Well-Structured Problem Solving Tests (WSPST) and Ill-Structured Problem Solving Tests (ISPST) after the problem solving instruction. In addition to that, exploring s...
Middle school students' use of problem-solving steps and their strategies in solving word problems
Alkan, C. Sinan; Akyüz, Didem; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2019)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the middle school students’ use of problem solving steps and their use of the strategies in the process of solution of Problem-Solving questions related to topics of numbers generally. The data was gathered in the fall semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. The study sample included 116 (29 fifth graders, 29 sixth graders, 25 seventh graders, and 33 eighth graders) middle school students in Konya, Turkey. Different Problem Solving Achievement tests were used...
The effects of problem solving on the topic of functions on problem solving performance, attitude toward problem solving and mathematics
Özalkan, Bilgen Ege; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of Problem Solving Method on 9th grade students‟ problem solving performance and attitudes toward mathematics and problem solving. This study was done in 2007-2008 academic year, in a private high school in Ankara. In the present study the experimental-control group pre-test post-test research design was used. The study was done with 67 students of the private high school. Experimental group was instructed with Problem Solving Method and control group w...
An Integrated use of vectorial approach with analytical and synthetic approaches: a teaching experiment with eleventh grade students on quadrilaterals
Mut, Ali İhsan; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2016)
The purposes of this research were to investigate the contributions of the instruction in which vectorial approach was integrated with synthetic and analytic approaches on quadrilaterals to the eleventh grade students’ problem solving strategies, to determine how the participants decided the type of approach to be utilized while solving problems on quadrilaterals, to specify major components of the instruction, and to examine the reflections of the participants’ on the instruction. Teaching experiment metho...
The Relationship among metacognition, reasoning ability, and mathematical problem solving performance of ninth grade students
Elitaş, Yüksel Özge; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Elementary Education (2015)
The purpose of the current study is to search the relationship among metacognition, reasoning ability, and the mathematical problem solving performance. Another purpose is to search the role of metacognition and reasoning ability on the prediction of mathematical problem solving performance. For this, the participants were the 578 ninth grade students who are at public Anatolian high schools in Izmir. There were three instruments. The first instrument was conducted for measuring metacognition; namely junior...
