The availability of a broad range of industrial sectors in which industrial designers take place and contribute to various stages of product development process can be considered as an advantage for industrial design profession. While this diversity allows designers to find positions in various industries, it is obvious that there is a stereotypical differentiation between choices of designers depending on their genders. The aim of this study is to examine how gender affects sectoral preferences of industrial design professionals which, in my opinion, demonstrates an example of occupational segregation. The empirical part of this study is conducted in Middle East Technical University, Department of Industrial Design with senior industrial design students attending the Graduation Project course. Analysing the findings of the interviews, this paper arrives at two main conclusions. Firstly, technological connotations, which are ascribed to every industrial sector at different levels, have a crucial role in identifying them with the masculine or the feminine and, thus, with the ‘suitable’ designer. As a result of this, women designers are concentrated around so called less-technological sectors, while men designers have a more homogeneous distribution over the whole industry – though they are associated mainly with technological sectors. Secondly, the interaction between various layers of the designer’s work such as industrial sectors, work environments and interdisciplinary relations is also influential on this segregation, since gender is articulated in all these layers.

Industrial design students’ experiences of interdisciplinary teamwork
Demir, Özümcan; Kaygan, Pınar; Department of Industrial Design (2016)
Collaboration with the people from different disciplines has become an essential part of the contemporary industrial design practice. Along with the current trend of interdisciplinary teamwork in professional life, recently new interdisciplinary programs have emerged in university education. Despite the increased importance of interdisciplinarity for industrial design discipline, little is known about the perspectives of industrial design students on interdisciplinary teamwork. This thesis examines this gap...
The position of three-dimensional modeling and visualization techniques in industrial design education
COŞKUN, MERVE; Akiner, Dilem (2012-05-04)
The purpose of this research is to determine the position of three-dimensional modeling and digital visualization within the scope of concept and product development process in the undergraduate education in Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Industrial Design, designate the problems that the students encounter during the integration of these methods to the design process, and finally question how these methods can be incorporated into design education in order to influen...
Multi-item two-ehelon inventory-distribution system design: a case study
Bulur, Hakan; Meral, Fatma Sedef; Department of Industrial Engineering (2005)
In this study, inventoryاdistribution system of a company operating in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry is analyzed. The system is a multiاitem, two-echelon, divergent inventoryاdistribution system with transportation constraints. The warehouses in the system are nonidentical and all of the warehouses are allowed to hold stock. The goal is to achive target customer service levels. Throughout the system, inventory is controlled by echelon stock periodic review (R, S) order-up-to level policy. The p...
Development Of Design Consultancy Business And Its Significance For Clients From Newly Industrialised Countries
Er, Özlem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1995)
In the advanced market economies, companies choose to commission professional designers to carry out design work externally at an increasing rate, rather than employing in-house design teams on a permanent basis. This paper first explores the historical development of the design consultancy business and sets out the reasons behind the preferences of companies either to use external or in-house design expertise. It then looks at the issue of using externa! design expertise from the industrial development per...
The Role of User Research in Design Process in Product Design Education
Yavuz, Cemil; Yalman Yıldırım, Zeynep (2017-08-01)
Building product usage scenario of products, building product-user relationship, thinking like users and empathizing with users are the most frequently encountered problems in project-based studio courses in current undergraduate education of Industrial Design and Industrial Product Design departments in Turkey. In this research, undergraduate second and third year programs of Industrial Design departments of 13 different universities in Turkey are examined. Learning outcomes, contents and objectives of the ...
