Configurable robot base design for mixed terrain applications
Bayar, Gökhan; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Mobile robotics has become a rapidly developing field of interdisciplinary research within robotics. This promising field has attracted the attention of academicy, industry, several government agencies. Currently from security to personal service mobile robots are being used in a variety of tasks. The use of such robots is expected to only increase in the near future. In this study, it is aimed to design and manufacture a versatile robot base. This base is aimed to be the main driving unit for various appli...
Exploring design requirements for educational robots used in K-12 education from educator’s perspective
Gürkanlı, Cengiz Hakan; Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Department of Industrial Design (2018)
Robotics field has broad application in human society and design space of robots even broader. In the last decades, robots were started to be used for various purposes after their first examples in industrial settings. Use of robots in various human work domains provide multiple benefits over other technological devices. Education is one of the challenging primary fields in which robots offer advantages over other technologies. Unlike other fields of robotics which requires advanced programming architecture...
Global Urban Localization of Outdoor Mobile Robots Using Satellite Images
DOĞRUER, CAN ULAŞ; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Dölen, Melik (2008-09-26)
Localization is one of the major research fields in mobile robotics. With the utilization of satellite images and Monte Carlo localization technique, the global localization of an outdoor mobile robot is studied in this paper. The proposed method employs satellite images downloaded from the Internet to localize the robot iteratively. To accomplish this, the proposed method matches the local laser scanner data with the segmented satellite images. Initial test results conducted on the METU campus are found to...
Improving the accuracy of a mobile robot for localization and mapping of an unknown environment
Gümrükcü, Gülşah; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2003)
This thesis deals with sensor based motion planning of a mobile robot for localization in an unknown environment. Using the developed algorithm the robot may construct the map (GVG) of any bounded environment, and the minimum distance between any two locations in the mapped environment can be determined. In addition, the accuracy of the robot, facing dead-reckoning error can be improved. With this study, the mobile robot finds the optimum path between any two locations in any bounded environment and traces ...
Design of a low-costs warm robotic system for flocking
Demir, Çağrı Ata; Turgut, Ali Emre; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
Swarm robotics is an approach to the coordination of large numbers of robots. The main motivation of this thesis is to study a robotic system designed to do flocking both indoors and outdoors. A walking robot is designed parallel to this purpose. In the first part of thesis, a leg is designed to minimize the displacement of center of mass of robot in vertical axis to eliminate mechanical noise. Mechanism analysis and Matlab optimization tools are utilized in this process. Then, electronic components of robo...
