A coherentist approach to the justification of scientific theories
Kamözüt, Mehmet Cem; Sayan, Erdinç; Department of Philosophy (2008)
Philosophers of science have long realized that it is not possible to decide which scientific theory is true just by relying on their empirical adequacy. That theories should possess other virtues in order to be accepted by the scientific community is well understood. Nevertheless, empirical adequacy remained as having a privileged value among these virtues. In this thesis I argue that scientific theories are accepted or rejected on the bases of an evaluation of their degree of coherence. In such a coherent...
Exploring representation of nature of science aspects in science textbooks
Yamak, Yeliz; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The aim of this study was to examine middle school science textbooks according to some criteria in terms of nature of science (NOS). A total of three middle school science textbooks in 6th, 7th and 8th grade and two biology units were analyzed in each textbook. In the 6th grade science textbooks, “Reproduction, Development and Growth in Living Beings”and “Systems in Our Body” units, in the 7th grade science textbook, “Systems in Our Body” and “Human and Environment” units, in the 8th grade science textbook,...
Values, practices, and philosophy of science
Keler, Raşit Hasan; Grünberg, David; Department of Philosophy (2016)
The main aim of philosophy of science is to clarify the nature of science. I believe that this can only be achieved by specifying the values and practices of particular scientific theories and research traditions. Therefore this text is about practices of sciences and in particular, about what scientists and scientific communities prefer about and choose the theories, research programs, models, tools, data, hypothesis, theoretical frameworks, and all kinds of things they employ. What needs to be done is not...
Synthesis of dioxin & tetra aryl pyrazine derivatives and their applications
Okyar, Burcu; Özçubukçu, Salih; Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem; Department of Chemistry (2019)
Aggregation induced emission (AIE) luminogens have attracted great attention in various disciplines of science in last decades. The photophysical properties and structural design of this type of luminogens make it possible to have large variety of applications in fluorescence sensors, cell imaging, microstructures aggregate and electroluminescence devices etc. All these studies promote researchers to find alternative AIE luminogens and also different application areas of AIE luminogen systems. 2,3,5,6-tetra...
A classification algorithm using mahalanobis distance clustering of data with applications on biomedical data sets
Durak, Bahadır; İyigün, Cem; Department of Industrial Engineering (2011)
The concept of classification is used and examined by the scientific community for hundreds of years. In this historical process, different methods and algorithms have been developed and used. Today, although the classification algorithms in literature use different methods, they are acting on a similar basis. This basis is setting the desired data into classes by using defined properties, with a different discourse; an effort to establish a relationship between known features with unknown result. This stud...
