Probabilistic assessment of seismic damage for an individual building or a building stock in terms of fragility curves generally requires utilization of ground motion records either seismologically consistent with the probable hazard for the area studied or chosen arbitrarily without considering the seismological characteristics, but covering a range of intensity levels. In both alternatives, the analyst should select several records to be able to perform the probabilistic studies accurately. This condition might not be always satisfied for regions where there are limited number of seismologically consistent records available or for cases when there are less number of records available for high intensity levels. To compensate for this, regional-specific stochastically simulated ground motions could be utilized. This study evaluates the suitability of simulated records in development of fragility curves for low- to mid-rise reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames sampled from existing buildings of Duzce, Turkey. The simulated records have been generated by using regional seismicity parameters of Duzce and employing stochastic finite-fault methodology. From the set of simulated records, a subset of 100 ground motion records have been selected to cover a wide range of ASI* values where ASI* is the modified version of ASI with 0.1-2.5 s range. To test the performance of the simulated records, a set of 'real' records compatible with the seismological characteristics of the region was selected from NGA-West2 ground motion database of PEER as well. Nonlinear time history analyses on multi-degree-of-freedom systems have been performed and fragility curves based on ASI*, PGV and HI have been developed. The results have been displayed graphically to present the appropriateness of the simulated records in loss estimation studies. © (2018) by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute All rights reserved.

An Investigation on the Use of Simulated Records in Derivation of Fragility Curves for RC Buildings in Duzce
Kadaş, Koray; Karim Zadeh Naghshineh, Shaghayegh; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Yakut, Ahmet (2017-10-11)

Seismic upgrading of reinforced concrete frames with structural steel elements
Özçelik, Ramazan; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
This thesis examines the seismic internal retrofitting of existing deficient reinforced concrete (RC) structures by using structural steel members. Both experimental and numerical studies were performed. The strengthening methods utilized with the scope of this work are chevron braces, internal steel frames (ISFs), X-braces and column with shear plate. For this purpose, thirteen strengthened and two as built reference one bay one story portal frame specimens having 1/3 scales were tested under constant grav...
Influence of the shear wall area to floor area ratio on the seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete buildings
Günel, Ahmet Orhun; Burak Bakır, Burcu; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
An analytical study is performed to evaluate the influence of shear wall area to floor area ratio on the behavior of existing mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings under earthquake loading. The seismic performance of five existing school buildings with shear wall ratios between 0.00% and 2.50% in both longitudinal and transverse directions and their strengthened counterparts are evaluated. Based on the structural properties of the existing buildings, additional buildings with varying shear wall ratios are ...
Analysis Methods for the Investigation of the Seismic Response of Concrete Dams
Aldemir, Alper; Yilmazturk, Sema Melek; Yucel, Ali Riza; Binici, Barış; Arıcı, Yalın; Akman, Altug (2015-01-01)
The consideratiOn of the dam-foundation-reservoir interaction is extremely important for estimating the seismic response of concrete gravity dams. Moreover, nonlinear analysis may be required for determining the possible risk associated with dams. In order to address these issues, DSI recently published the "Guidelines for Seismic Design of Concrete Dams". Authors who have contributed to the preparation of this document provide a perspective on the seismic safety/design of concrete dams and structural analy...
Numerical simulations of reinforced concrete frames tested using pseudo-dynamic method
Mutlu, Mehmet Başar; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Considering the deficiencies frequently observed in the existing reinforced concrete buildings, detailed assessment and rehabilitation must be conducted to avoid significant life and value loss in seismic zones. In this sense, performance based evaluation methods suggested in the regulations and codes must be examined and revised through experimental and analytical research to provide safe and economical rehabilitation solutions. In this study, seismic behavior of three reinforced concrete frames built and ...
