All rights reserved. In the Lesser Antilles, coastal inundations and wave impact on infrastructure from hurricane-induced storm surges cause great threats to lives, properties, and ecosystems. One of the aims of this work is adaptation of data of estimating extreme surface wind speeds from satellite remote sensing for numerical modelling. In particular, we show that the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission of NASA, along with the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT), are able to capture a substantial part of the tropical cyclone structure, and to aid in determination of external force for storm waves in numerical model. For this work we use NAMI-DANCE (Yalciner et al 2014, Zaytsev and Pelinovsky 2011) numerical models and statistical methods to investigate worst case scenarios of storm surges levels for the case study of Martinique and Guadeloupe Islands.. Results confirm that direction of cyclone propagation plays a major role in Lesser Antilles. Assessing current and future storm surges hazard with sufficient spatial resolution is of primary interest to help coastal planners and decision makers to develop mitigation and adaptation measures.

This paper gives a state-of-the-art review of seismic-induced liquefaction with special reference to marine structures. The paper is organized in seven sections: (1) introduction; (2) seismic-induced liquefaction in which a general account of soil liquefaction is presented; (3) existing codes/guidelines regarding seismic-induced liquefaction and its implications for marine structures; (4) review of the Japanese experience, giving a brief history of earthquakes and design codes, describing the current design...
Drought Analysis using CORDEX Simulations over the Mediterranean Climate Regions of Turkey
Yıldırım, Anıl; Yücel, İsmail (2019-10-01)
Drought Analysis using CORDEX Simulations over the Mediterranean Climate Regions of Turkey Anil Poyraz and Ismail Yucel Middle East Technical University Engineering Faculty, Civil Engineering Department, Water Resource Lab. anil.poyraz@metu.edu.tr, iyucel@metu.edu.tr ABSTRACT Mediterranean region is one of the hotspots of the world in this respect to impacts of climate change. Dry summers and rainy winters -the characteristic of this climate type- makes this region more vulnerable in this sense. This...
Hyperspectral Unmixing Based Analysis of Forested Areas
Başkurt, Nur Didem; Omruuzun, Fatih; Çetin, Yasemin (2015-05-19)
This study aims to extract the planted regions in partially forested area by analyzing the hyperspectral remote sensing images acquired with airborne platforms. The proposed study utilizes the endmember signatures obtained from hyperspectral unmixing algorithms in order to classify the image pixels. The classification algorithm selects the endmember with highest spectral vegetation characteristic, and associates this endmember with the planted area pixels. The algorithm is tested on a scene covering METU An...
Wind resource characterization and utilization via wind turbines at METU NCC
Haneef, Fahad; Taylan, Onur; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2017-6)
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the wind energy potential at Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) by statistically analyzing the measured data between 2013-2016 at METU NCC wind mast. Fact that Cyprus is an island, not enriched with fossil fuels, electricity generation is dependent upon heavy consumption of imported fuel oil. Numerous studies have proven the island’s solar potential but little has been done for wind power feasibility. Investigating the feasibilit...
A comparative life cycle assessment of material handling systems for sustainable mining
Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Demirel, Nuray (2016-06-01)
In this comprehensive LCA comparison study, main objectives are to investigate life cycle environmental impacts of off-highway mining trucks and belt conveyors in surface mining. The research methodology essentially entails determination of the functional unit as 20,000 tons/day coal production transported for 5 km distance. After the system boundary was selected as the entire life cycle of material handling systems including pre-manufacturing of steel parts and plastic components, manufacturing, transporta...
