Bu araştırmada kronik ağrılar öz-belirleme kuramı bağlamında ele alınmış ve özerklik desteğinin kronik ağrı düzeyi üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiştir. Araştırmada, katılımcıların yakın çevresinden aldığı özerklik desteğinin kronik ağrı düzeyini azaltacağı (H1) ve bu iki değişken arasında temel psikolojik ihtiyaç tatmininin aracı değişken rolü oynayacağı (H2) hipotezleri test edilmiştir. Yapılan 3 aylık boylamsal çalışmada, 85 kronik ağrı yakınması olan katılımcı verilen ölçekleri toplam iki sefer doldurmuştur. Katılımcıların yaşları 18 ve 62 arasında olup (Ort. = 41.60), çoğunluğu kadınlardan (%91) ve beyaz Amerika’lılardan (%90) oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri gecikmeli panel desen analizleri kullanılarak test edilmiştir. Bulgulara göre, 1. zamandaki özerklik desteği algısı ile 2. zamandaki ağrı düzeyi arasında negatif yönde anlamlı bir ilişki vardır. İlk ölçümde algılanan özerklik desteği arttıkça, 3 ay sonra yapılan ikinci ölçümde belirtilen kronik ağrı düzeyi azalmaktadır. Daha da önemlisi, 1. zamandaki ağrı düzeyi istatistiksel olarak kontrol edildikten sonra, özerklik desteğinin kronik ağrı üzerindeki boylamsal etkisi hala anlamlı kalmaktadır (H1). Ayrıca, bulgular bu iki değişken arasındaki ilişkide temel psikolojik ihtiyaçların aracı değişken rolü oynadığını destekler yöndedir (H2).
